Is anyone running a 336 cam shaft? I am interested to know what difference there is over standard. I am currently doing a top end overhaul and timing chain on my R100GSPD and if the cam looked like a good thing this would be a good time to stick it in. The bike has been retired from bush work and is predominately used on bitumen and good dirt roads so any loss of low down power is not critical.

I've got two bikes with the 336 cams.

My 78 R100RS goes well but has a tendency to bog down below 3k if you aren't in the right gear at the right time. It goes very well as the revs rise though.

My 100GS PD has a RS cam fitted as well but is only fitted with the standard pistons so doesn't make the most of the cam. I had a hell of a job sorting the jetting out. The standard airbox just doesn't flow enough air. I spent a lot of time and money on dyno runs and a fancy air/fuel ratio meter trying to sort it out before ending up with a pre 1980 RS airbox and starter motor cover and carbs jetted to the earlier RS sizes.
The bikes coming apart this winter for a major rebuild I'll be fitting the standard cam, airbox and anything else I've changed along the way.

Maybe even giving the poor thing a wash !! :augie

What is the HP gain using mod Kenny? :D

Thanks for the input blokes. As always it seems that airhead engine mods require siginificant time and cash inputs to be successful. I think I will continue down the "leave the bastard alone path". :D

Top end overhaul will probably feel like an extra 10HP anyway :blast

As a quick test if the bona fides of a Beemer I look to the condition/ color of the headers , and Robs pass the test with flying , err, colors.

Amazing how many bikes manage to get twice round the Sahara or over the Grossglockner without discoloring the headers in the slightest - aint photoshop wonder full --.

If you clean the headers with 'Wonderwheels' it takes them some time to discolour again surprisingly!

cheers,
