3500 Mile Review of R1300GSA ASA

You’re probably right . Only rode one for an hour but found it pretty cramped and not great for my dodgy knees . Pretty sure the seat to peg position on the Himmy was more roomy as rode it back from Spain through France in two days with no issues .
The 1300s are good bikes but really can’t see me ever getting one , certainly not new as they’ve become stupidly expensive .
My 6 month old Vstrom 1050 with 700 miles on the clock cost me £8999 and is perfect for my needs . Seems very comfy, ultra smooth , good screen . I’ve spent £650 on it , fitting heated grips , SW Motech rack and top box and an Apple Car Play unit and it’s fully sorted and ready to tour . Will just bungee my Enduristan roll bag to pillion seat when we go to Spain and Portugal this summer .
Infact the Vstrom and my fully loaded Voge cost less than £17k or about the same as a base 1300GS.
Horses for courses .
agree new price is a bit daft tbh but I guess its only money, I didn't buy my gs new, went in with intention to order new and after a bit of discussion they wheeled their ex demo out, 'how's about this one', it was late on a Saturday, 4k saving on new to be had on a 4 month old bike ....fuck it g'wan then. Bike was a bit rushed out to market at first with a clunky box but it's good now, a 6k mile service and a few software updates seem to have made a big difference. Dealer support has been top notch but it has needed to be, cant see me changing bike for another couple of years as it stands.

Dont really fancy an asa and mixed reviews but would have to try it.

They all (pretty much) do the same thing, vstrom sounds like a fun bike and a lot of bang for buck (y)

Love my ASA GSA . Mine was no where near £26000 . Think I paid £19000 for my previous 1250 GSA . I find the box pretty good and have not done 3500 miles yet on mine . I have had GSA’s since the 1150 in 2002 and none have been beautiful bikes . They have a functionality about them . Sat on my 1300 it looks from the seat much like the 1250 . Rides better . Turns faster sounds great . Looks like I have stopped working and am looking forward to putting miles on it as the weather gets better and the salt goes . Everyone has an opinion . What counts is your own . Love my New GSA

Glad that you are in love with yours Rob, that’s all that matters. 👍👍

It’s not your fault!
🤣🤣🤣

He seemed to not understand the P parking mode on the video and kept complaining about how complicated it was to take it off.!
All you have to do is put it in neutral (by holding the M\D button or hold the gear lever down) whilst holding the brake on. Do that before switching the ignition off or do it after switching the ignition on again.
It's also a good security feature to prevent anyone wheeling the bike away easily. No clutch lever so the bike is locked in gear by default when stopped.

I have the ASA and find the gearbox in manual mode very smooth, auto is ok if tootling about but in the bends manual is fine, the seat I have a sheepskin cover on and again find it ok at the moment if it gets too hard I will put a airflow cover on it.
The bike being stuck in Park so you cant push it only seems to happen if you switch it off whilst still in gear (I might be wrong mind) but one thing I do like is when its looked in park its gonna take some moving to nick.
They are a big chunk of cash and I hated it when it was released but it did grow on me once I saw it in the dealers.
I'm also riding a new ASA (GS, not GSA), and it improves with time as you get used to it. I've also found riding in the Semi-Manual mode incredibly smooth. I'm really pleased with my decision to go ASA.

This is a pretty damning review of the ASA on the GSA from someone who's bought one. Let's hope BMW sort the issues with a software update.

I changed my 1 year old 1300gs for a 1300gs ASA 2 weeks ago
I’m also having trouble with it when it’s in D mode bike jaults every time when changing in any mode rain /road /dynamic
But when it’s in manual mode it’s spot on
Ok you have to change gear via foot lever when going up the box but it changes down faultless even with full akrapovic system fitted
I’m using manual mode all the time

Bit confused to understand what you are saying. You say it jolts when changing up in D mode but then say you have to change via foot lever when going up.
Try and use it in D mode and if it hasn't changed gear when you would have like to just do it via the lever and then let it go back to D. They are supposed to learn??.
Mine does jerk on higher rev \speed up changes if you have been giving it some gas. I've found you have to try and work with it, as an example if its going up the gears in D and you get to say 50 mph in 4th and still on an open throttle it doesn't change up early enough sometimes. So I just either change up manually or ease the throttle and it will change up to 5th and then 6th as you are now cruising at about 60.
It's not perfect but it gives you the choice of just overriding D, if it hasn't changed to suit you just change with the lever. I find I just ride mostly in D mode. Great in traffic and when queuing, don't have to think about what gear you are in, just ride and let it sort it out.

That’s not great, is it ?
So you’re basically riding a bike with a quick shifter but it won’t stall when you come to a halt.Seems like much more development is required by BMW.Luckily they seem to have no end of test riders who are happy to pay rather than be paid to do this for them . Game changer 😜

Frankly all the reviews are subjective. The one above indeed is quite critical but I personally believe it’s all down to personal preference.

So the ASA might seem clunky in its shifting but in same breath he says the manual is superb. I found the manual great and wasn’t a big fan of the auto shifter either but I did like not having the gear lever. Agree it shifts too quickly as do many car automatics. I did not try the Dynamoc mode but will once mine arrives.

That’s my opinion.

Did not notice changing in the bends. Would not be happy with that either bit generally compared to my 1250 the change and gears were smooth with a lot of possibilities.
Does it learn as it goes? I sincerely have my doubts. I am happy I have it but only time and mileage will tell
Keep you posted. .

I tried the ASA last week and for me it’s a no. It’s beneficial in slow speed heavy traffic when the shifts are quite smooth and you don’t need to feather the clutch or find neutral. When pressing on to any degree the shifts are not very smooth.
It adds weight and cost and is something else to potentially go wrong.

I just can’t get my head around an auto bike .
Hate scooters , whilst I can still connect the action of clutch and foot I will , once I can’t I will give up riding. Sorry but auto bike is for me No No , it’s just one thing too many and not needed.

That’s a typical narrow minded British view .
So if you had an accident tomorrow and lost movement in your left hand but the DVLA let you keep your licence if you road a clutch less bike , you’d rather pack it all in instead of riding a bike that let you continue enjoying life on two wheels ?

Yes I would stop , as for me , my reason for riding has stopped. I ride for the thrill, not the action . Not narrow minded just my view .

A friend had a bad accident , paraplegic, he hates driving now but had to with all the additional aides. Like he said , it’s A to B now not like the RS that took him , and he misses that .

Fair enough .
We’re all different. Some of us enjoy being out in the fresh air, taking in the scenery.Others enjoy riding from A to B as fast as possible.Must be a Ducati thing . 😜
