3mm.................is it enough?

on a R1100RT with a rear Conti Road Attack:nenau and the tyre has done 3500 miles in Spain last Sept and that's all

7-10 days jaunt and :beerjug::beer: to Germany this Friday, with Micky - trip is max about 2000miles:D

Just took the wheel off to fit a new tyre and gave it a thorough (more thorough check:blast)................with a depth guage all over

Lowest point is 3mm (dead centre) and highest is 4mm+

My bike owning neighbours (CBR600 & Honda CB1000) have all had a look abd we reckon it's fine for a week to Germany

New one will only have 6mm

Change now or run it?
 
Johnny, with the stash of cash you got for that wilbers you could kit out your bike while out there :augie

i change tyres at 2mm, and yours will use more than 1mm in 2000 miles, so i'd change it now.

I got 5500 miles from my rear Conti Road attack and it was shot when it was changed, towards the end of it's life it wasn't too great in the wet, 50/50 call change it now and keep the part worn as a spare after all the RT is a keeper isn't it?
Or are you going to cash in :pullface

Plan 2; take the GSA............
 
Went into Wooster's tyre place and they reckoned the min depth was 3.5mm, so they said run it and they put the new one on next week when I get home
 
The wear rate decreases the more the tyre is worn (as the tread blocks move around less).

If its on your mind worrying you a little,
Change it ,and you will enjoy the trip more.
If it squares off quick you won't enjoy the bends as much.

Otherwise it wil be on your mind if you ride on poor roads ,and in rain.:)
If you get it changed abroad you lose time ,and you cant find the cheapest bargain:augie

Just get it done ,balanced fitted etc
or get your moneys worth and run it out.

take care on the journey from the ferry home.
you may not have much tread left :proff
 
lets not all forget he's a fckin tight arsed yorkshireman :D

he'll be there and back and still have it on for most of the summer, then sell it on ebay as 'only used once '

'Fraid it's the opposite way Greg :augie

The wear rate increases as the tyre wears. With good tread, more rubber, because the rubber moves, that in contact with the road surface doesn't move about on the road surface as much .. which equals less wear.

As the tread wears the rubber becomes more rigid, more firm, and every braking and acceleration input to that rubber try's to move that firmer rubber on the road surface ... hence more wear :eek:

I'm a thoroughbred Yorkshireman and I've just replaced a rear tyre with 3mm tread remaining for new rubber ... for the same trip :thumb
