40 days old and subframe paint gone!

I think that's a very fair point and my answer would be that I suspect not.

Funilly I was thinking of Giles  on the way into work this morning and was trying to get my boots (MX boots) to rub the frame on mine. I couldn't get anywhere near it (well I could but it felt all wrong).

Andres

I wonder if the problem is made worse by wearing your trousers tucked into your boots so that the direct contact of the boot on the frame accelerates the wear process?

My Loon Pants are worn over my boots but even with them flapping in the wind they don't touch the frame (as evidenced by a nice covering of dirt on the frame), so yup, some people hug the frame with their calves and some are all loose and flappy (like my Loon Pants).

I'm using Streetguard 3 pants at the moment with winter on the way and have not got any frame rubs yet on my WC, my pant's are not making much in the way of contact with the frame, and the schoeller fabric on the SG3 is like sandpaper. I did clean it at the weekend though and went and put some clear tape on some spots of the frame were the cable ties from the factory were starting to wear through.

Paint finish of the frame looks terrible on my WC compared to my Hexhead though, looks like the frame was painted by someone ingesting a gallon of water based paint and sharting it at the frame.

BMW could do better with this though, my Tiger 1050 had clear tape applied from the factory on venerable area's, as did my Z1000.

Best to wear these all year round no boot wear

I agree to an extent that is not the end of the world and that a bit of tape would cover all but I didn't expect to be tapping up a two month old bike, I'm more than happy to buy a set of the guards pictured above but only once it's sorted as it already turns a light orange just through condensation, I still say the plastic heel guards are rubbish compared to the ally ones, as for riding style who knows but how do they expect you to ride..? legs bowed out at the knees and just the tips of your toes on the pegs facing in so that no part of your leg is anywhere near the frame .? interesting look maybe but not for me :-) & I thought adventure bikes were built for adventures. .

I think the right side guard is only to protect the master cylinder, the left just to keep the boot away from the swing arm.

The paint does seem to be very soft to wear through in 40 days. How many miles? Hardly the expected quality from a German manufacturer. Or in this case a German assembler of cheap Chinese parts.

Is that the Touratech or Wunderlich monkey he's using? Seems to be doing a good job of cutting him through the air, hardly a ruffle in his barnet.

You need these ;) problem solved :green gri

I went to have a look at putting some Ventureshield on my frame today, but I have these, and there's hardly any exposed frame with them fitted, so these do a spot on job.:thumb

Are they easy enough to whip off to do a quick corrosion check? Thinking of Bendy Toy's thread on his Hexhead. They look quite neat, and expensive :)

I wasn't far out then :)

Same with the 1100 as well Johnny.

I wouldn't call it rider error, but more of riding styles and where riders place their feet on the footrests and end up rubbing up against the sub frame. I notice that Giles has noticed wear on his new KTM already within a few days of purchase and has had to do the 3M tape treatment. I'm not so sure if the more resistant paints of the past would have been able to resist such rubbing from some riders.

Absolutely correct, Bob and spot with your observations, as usual:thumby:

Rightly or wrongly you won't be getting your subframe replaced or even painted.

Just slap some hammerite and tape on it and forget all about it.

Its life Jim...

Yep, if you've got spare cable ties, as you'll need to snip them to get the guards off.

I had the same problem and bought these...

I have a new 64 plate GSA TE and alreday the paint just up from the supposed heal guards has worn through to the bare metal,I dont wear crosser style boots I use alpinestars smx4's and bmw rallye trousers over the top down to my ankles, this I might expect after a couple of years or hard ridding with mx boots but after just 40 days of ownership and just going to and from work etc wtf!!! The heal guards are just shit bendy plastic and all this on the worlds greatest adventure bike...??? I love the bike dont get me wrong but this is poor...! My 10yr old gsa 1150 hasnt even worn in the same place after 10yrs!.. warannty claim..?

thanks rob

I had the exact same problem and originally covered the 2 worn spots with frame protectors in black to stop it getting worse. Then I bought these. They are brilliant and stop the problem entirely.....two different designs available...

The black electrical tape I wrapped around the subframe on my GSA is just starting to wear through after 4 years.

At 50 pence a roll, I think I might replace it. :D

Electrical tape is the way - can't believe I've forgotten to do this GSA - nearly 9k miles....better remove some mud tomorrow and take a look !

When the k1200s first came out I put some miles on 6 bikes for BMW Uk ahead of the press launch (contracting in IT at the time for them) so they could carry out the first service.....they asked me to stop after the 6th as my (non off road, soft) boots had worn through the subframe.....they had to re-spray the frames......whoops. At least they've learned....oh....wait...;) 7 new BM bikes later...I'm happy to live with a little electrical tape.

Hahahaha, very funny. I think it's an SWMonkey but can't be sure from that angle.
