450, you read it here….

I couldn’t believe it, until I read the MCN test yesterday

In my head I thought it would be 160/170kg fuelled from a 450cc single

My Tenere 700 is a twin and is only 7kg more than this new 450 RE - at 204 kg fuelled

Where do RE get all their weight from ?

It’s engine is half the size of my Tenere for a start

We’re in the Highlands this week and I am on my XR 400 with a mate on his DRZ 400 ‘E’ version and that does punt out over 40 hp and is water cooled and weighs less than 135kg fuelled
He’s had up to 90 (private road) on the clock with an extra tooth on front sprocket this week

Progress eh? In 20 years
Go and have a testride, they ride really well (no I am not buying one) the whole package is superb

Just a wild guess, but both mudguards are metal, for starters.
It’s a solidly built bike and the weight isn’t noticeable when riding .
Never realised your Tenere was a 900 !
Suggest you ride one before giving a blinkered opinion on it.As usual .
Progress, eh !
Maybe I will try one then, after your recommendation
You cannot argue with the posted test though

The 411 seemed to hit the balance of a sweet bike - old school charm with some modern niceties

Maybe this new 450 is ‘trying’ a bit too hard - time will tell

I pay little heed to the Ride test.
There are dozens of reviews on YouTube praising the bike, with little negativity.
The most thorough is ThatBikerSimon who rode one around India for 2000 miles with 2 mates including Alex Pirie , who owns Nomadic Knights.
He’s spent 20 years riding around India /Himalayas leading tours on the old 411 and Bullets etc.
They also took a new Triumph Scrambler 400X and KTM Adv 390.
They swapped every 3 days so each did about 700 miles on each bike.
All three concluded that the new Himmy was by far the best.
Go try one and report back with your findings .

Edited to add, here’s that Simon’s conclusion after 2000 miles

And see what these guys have to say on an Aussie launch along with the RE Chief Design Engineer.

That’s good to hear👍
Will watch it later, this evening
Got some riding to do today, first

Maybe this new 450 is ‘trying’ a bit too hard

I thought that when news of the 450 came out. I said at the time of the bike’s announcement that Royal Enfield have probably spoilt a very good bike in the pursuit of power. I was wrong. What Royal Enfield has done is quite clever. They have taken the best aspects of the former 411 and made them better. It is actually lighter than the old bike by a smidge. I can’t say that I notice the weight saving, nor can I say that I ever remember anyone ever calling the 411 ‘heavy’.

The mistake, if there is one, is for people to compare the two. A mistake which maybe starts as the two bikes share one single name, ‘Himalayan’. It is (other than near enough the weight) the only thing they have in common. Other than the practicalities of running separate production lines, the two bikes could have remained in Enfield’s sales brochure, with different names as they are different bikes entirely.

Will I miss my 411 when it goes? No. I don’t miss bikes or cars that I once owned, they are not people or babies. The 411 was and remains a very good motorbike, very different to my 1600 and indeed any bike that I have owned in past 45 or more years. Will I enjoy the 450 when it arrives? I hope so, yes.

PS The one overarching thing I like about the 411 and, hopefully, about the 450? I like the dealership * I go through, in the same way that I liked the very small, somewhat basic, dealership I used in Stanford le Hope for my many years with Honda motorcycles. No airs, no graces…. And unlike BMW…. They do call you back.

* Bacon’s in Newbury Park, Ilford. Sadly, Wybrow’s in Stanford le Hope is long gone. Bacon’s is a long established Kawasaki dealership, I can’t remember a time when they weren’t there, trading from their very small premises.

I will
Which is a good RE dealer in Yorkshire?
Any recommendations?
I demo’d one at colin appleyard keighley, not a bad ride down for you Johnny. I didnt think anything seemed particularly budget about it, it handles very well feeling substantial yet light on its toes and it was quite quick too, up to 70, it feels every bit its claimed 40bhp whether correct or not i dunno.

Any sign of the LDG report on YT yet?

And to add ... Dear reader, I bought one but my reasons are partly to do with the very positive reviews the bike has had and also because of my experience of the Mk1 Himalyan. The new one seems to offer pretty much what the old one did but with improvements which many detractors of the old one commented on. It also offers pretty good value for money for a robust bike with touring potential and good petrol mileage.

As the guy in the vid put it ... "If you liked the old Himalayan, you'll love the new one!"

It's lardy because RE haven't spent any money to lighten it. Can't see it bothering most of their customers who won't use it for much resembling off roading where it matters. They'd rather save some money.

It’s suddenly ‘lardy’ because some 5’ 8” dwarf from MCN has declared it to be.

It's lardy because it's a 450 that weighs nearly as much as a Tenere 700.

Edit: I really like the 450, but I also own an homologated 690 that weighs 146Kg.

I am just putting the finishing touches to it

My God, what is it you’ve been doing all day? The first time you screwed up the recording of the report and you had to do it all again. Having wasted time, doing something twice, which (had you paid attention) you could have done once, you now sat on your hands since. Get on with it!

:D

:beerjug:

PS Looking forward to seeing it, too.
