Hi there all you GS guru's my 1150 has just done 48,000kms or 30,000 miles which ever you work in is there anything I should be looking out for? rear diff, head bearings?, Wheel bearings ect???

Just asking as so far she has been trouble free, apart from falling out of overdrive from time to time either into faulse neutral or back to 5th. Other than that a wonderful bike trouble free is there anything you can think of which might just be about to go bang!!!

Front exhausts before the y peice seem to be looking a bit worse for ware how long do they normally last?

Thats about it for now cheers.

Richard,

no problem. Well, for self-confidence you may put it to BMW full service always, with lotsa cash input.

Mine is nearing 40Kkms, just shaking front and rear wheels every service to see any signs of bearings worn, none so far. I did removed the final drive assemly fully to clean and ispect it, but it was quite pointless i must say, it looked like new. Check the tightness of all the frame and exhaust bolts, lubricate speedo, clutch, choke, throttle cables with WD-40 or similar. Change the engine, gearbox and FD oils REGULARY (every 10Kkms, yes, the GB and FD oils too!). New air filter, valve clearance and trhottle body sinc blah blah etc. Typical service...

Anything more serious to check or not? -> If the bike works so far - just nail it! :) If doesn't werk, then start looking what's wrong with it :D

I'd not recommend lubricating cables on the GS at all - especially in dry & dusty conditions.

The cables are teflon lined and designed to run without further lubrication. Having swapped the throttle cables and splitter box last year after a few thousand desert miles I was amazed at the amount of dust and crap inside the splitter box - however, since it was dry, it didn't clog anything up and the cables still ran relatively freely - I think any lubrication would've shortened cable life considerably.

Swapping cables is a bit of a pain, but would make your throttle action (which has probably stiffened gradually, without you noticing), and consequently your ride, much smoother - it certainly did for me.

Mike:)

Thanks

Thanks guys, it's been serviced by BMW since new but not too sure if they really know what they are doing other than changing oils (I have changed all the oils every 5000kms since new)(mainly due to the high temperature running it get over here)(and a fair amount of off roading mainly in dusty mountain tracks and soft sand)

They adjust the valves each time also.

Funny you should mention the cables getting stiffer on the throttle I have thought sveral times about that and now you mention it they do seem stiffer, maybe worth looking in to. Air cleaner is K&N and I clean it every 5000kms so that should be OK.

Planning a trip to Oman in the first week of June so it's gonig to be F%$£&^G Hot and want to minimize the chances of any thing going wrong.

Maybe buy some spare throttle cables to take with me, Oh and the choke seems a bit stiff too.

Take care thanks again Richard.:beerjug:

As another repeat to this theme, my 1150 has covered 47k and running nice and smooth (except on cracked up highways).
I usually get it serviced in Kuwait at the beemer dealer and use synthetic oil at the moment.

Thinking of changing to GTX as it is a lot cheaper and can therefore change it more often.

I don't fancy taking too much apart as I do not have a decent tool set here or an enclosed garage to work in. Any small bit of wind blows dust everywhere.

Going North to Kuwait for another trip to see the lads for a ride next week. And it is a lot more hotter than Oman.
