Looking for a 5 seater family car for my lad who has fallen on hard times. Currently without a car, he has a wife and three kids under 12, so something safe and solid is required. Budget up to £3k but maybe a little more for the right car.

Nothing with a wet belt or loads of rust please. I'm in the Wirral/Liverpool/Chester area but will travel for the right car, what's out there?

High Peak Autos have a Mondeo Titanium X at your price. Plus you have the protection of buying from a good dealer 👍

My 5 series will be up for sale soon, big comfy family car with loads of room in the back and a big boot. Working air con, auto, good spec.

Would be in budget. I am in Scotland though (however much worse places to waft down the M6)

….in the best colour too…..what a bargain from a decent, honest seller! 👍

In his budget of 2k to a maximum of 3k, it's probably not the first thing you'd think of, but have a look at Renault Scenic/Grand Scenic.
5 Star NCAP, so safe for the family.
We have a 2011 vintage one, owned since 2014, currently at c130k miles (not for sale, sorry). When the present Mrs T 'parked it' on the garden wall earlier this year :blast (don't ask), we thought it may have needed a sill/jacking point repair that would have outweighed its value, fortunately that's not been the case, so it retains its battle scars and passed it's MOT subsequently... but we looked for another as a replacement, and there were plenty in that price range.

Ours, a 1.5dci, with the dual clutch automatic-y manual gearbox thing, despite our misgivings around french reliability, in our 110k miles of ownership (and 130k total miles), has needed:
Routine Servicing and tyres (and 1x cambelt per schedule (72k miles))

Repairs:
1x fuel injector
4x heater plugs
1x suspension wishbone
2x rear coilsprings.
1x aircon hose (perished)

If ours blew up today, I'd have no hesitation to look for another.

Hope he gets sorted.

Avoid anything with the adblue pump located in the fuel tank, fuckers are known to fail , and at £1300 a pop is a piss take

DAMHIK

I don't think AdBlue pumps are ever located in the fuel tank. They're located in the AdBlue tank.
If you're going to fix a failed system, it's sometimes a case of a pump and ECU which can be more like £2K.
However, from what I see, most people have the system mapped out.
It remains to be seen, how long it's possible to get away with that before it becomes an MOT failure.

Is it not already an MOT failure if identified, just that currently the MOT tester won't necessarily spot it?
