50K LOW CHASSIS GS 2013 TE

Some of the very early gs’s with the silver engines had corrosion issues so close inspection. I had a 2013 model which when I sold it had done 26000 miles and had no mechanical problems during my ownership.

Have seen service history and spoke with dealer who did the work. No major faults recorded and any warranty recalls completed. Last major service done by motor rally on Luton.
Any thoughts regarding this information gratefully received.

It now matters not what anyone says about this bike good or bad ....

All your looking for now is affirmation to buy...

your heart has overruled any reasonable doubts that people have given you

ie

better bikes for the money. early model , potential faults etc

repair costs with no warranty ..

so spend away, it's your money ;)

You wont be the first to get your fingers burnt, and you wont be the last

If you must buy the bike take a test ride. Suspension is a fairly easy fix. The gearbox on the early bikes feels like stirring a bucket of scaffold clips. Check for 4th gear thrumming at 3250rpm to 4500rpm, it was bad enough on my '14 bike for me to to get rid of it.

I'm realising everyone's concern so how much to lower an earlier model including changing both side and centre stands?

So if I go for an earlier model, which one is my best option?

I have an early model 2013 LC, came from 15 yrs on a 1150GS (1999 model). As mentioned above the fly wheel is lighter, took me a while to change my riding style from the higher torque lower revs of the 1150 but now I am quite enjoying the lively engine. It has put the smile back after a day in the saddle. Changing from 1st to second and back is 90% of the time clunk, even the 1150 was a bit smoother, but after 2nd it is smooth up and down. I don't think the paint can be as bad as the 1150GS was, I am anal about clean vehicles and the 1150 casing was flaking everywhere after 15yrs. This bike don't have nay flaking yet and can't see any issues developing yet. I suggest you try the bike but also a later model oil head. Take your time, there will be a lot of bikes coming into market over next few weeks, people are starting to upgrade again.

The chap is confident that I won't find anything wrong with it and said I can take it for an extended test ride. Fingers crossed.

Trying to find somewhere who sells the lower side and centre stand for the TE. Where should I be looking please?

Now your confusing things ??

if its factory lowered, it will already have lowered centre and side stands

if your buying a standard height bike, then you will need the following

It's OE for lowered centre and side stands

Motorworks for SH ( if your lucky) ;)

Last option is the DIY route -

Centre stand is easy 30mm out of the centre section

Side stand needs some geometry work to make sure the side stand foot is at the correct angle when the bike is on its side

The early LCs also had a lighter flywheel so no torque like the TCs.

I had a 2014 with the light flywheel and it was much faster and more flexible than a TC. The replacement 2016 engine with the heavier flywheel didn’t feel quite as lovely, but the performance was still in a different league to the TC.

I still prefer my TC though.

Each to their own, of course.

My early lc (May 2013) has had no problems at all until, at 47k miles, when the front shock started weeping. It gets replaced on Wednesday for the rebuilt one I bought on this forum for £300. Yes, the gearbox is clunky. So am I. I can live with it. I'd quite like a 1250 but it's not £14,000 better. A good early lc is a good bike and a good buy. Better, imho, than the previous model, especially if you are used to more modern bikes.

Don't be put off by the doom-mongers here. The 2013 lc is a bloody good bike.

Totally agree - by 50k any problems will have been identified and sorted. My only thoughts are this...

7k for a bike that has done 50k is optomistic. If you kept it for 3 years and put on an additional 20k you will be looking at least a suspension refresh, new discs etc and own a bike with 70k miles - how easy will it be to sell this? unless at a great discount.

when thinking about costs you need to factor in total cost of ownership, that includes depreciation etc. Hang on you will pick up a bike with half the mileage for around 7k

We've all tried telling him that ( see post 73) he's let his head overrule any logic or sense ...

So where are we with this? Did the OP buy it? :nenau
No I didn't but I now own a lowered chassis 2015 model. Very happy but I can't believe how much difference the flywheel added weight has reduced the take off speed from a stop. World's apart!
I wonder if you can fit a 2013 engine unit into the 2015 chassis????
