After 26 years, my R80 is almost due its 50,000 mile service, so I'll be doing it this summer.

I'm only planning to do the standard major service, however I seem to recall that it might be worth replacing the exhaust valves at about this mileage as they are prone to failure.

Worthwhile preventative maintenance or waste of time and money?

Depends on budget and what you read in the magic internet. Valves suspect ( according to internet ) at about your mileage. If using bike often, may be worth a Scrimminger overhaul ( usually the exhaust valve ).

If going that far, throw in some new piston rings as the nikosil bores don't wear.:)

Pop the heads off and check valve guide play when valve is at its open position "ish"
Lots of play ? Change the guides

Thanks all, looks like it's going to take some work.

Might mean that it ends up sitting next to the R65 for a while until I get round to it, and I concentrate on riding my R1200 :-(

Pointed out to me that Scriminger has now retired from Airheads etc :comfort

Valves

Have just replaced the valves on my recently acquired G/S with 72K on the clock. One of the exhaust valves has a visible crack across the head so yes, I'd replace them. Disaster averted!

It used to be recommended that you change the 650cc exhaust valves at 50k miles and the 800/1000cc at 80K miles.

If that's the case I can do 30k miles on each of them before I have to worry :-)

That'll see me out

That'll keep a few more airheads on the road then. I know of at least 4 airheads he made a mess of valve jobs on and two of those were mine.
