53.3 MPG intresting I hear you say....

When the ADV screen was on air brake high the turbulence caught the peak and tugged it around, low down it does not. Besides the peak on the new Shoei is designed in a wind tunnel, so said the man in the shop with the big

windows

Yes the turbulance is or was the problem with the Arai tour I allways had my screen on low as the wind itself was not the problem !

All that said I cannot use the Arai tour on the XR as the peak shakes the helmet so badly at speed I cant see properly !

The Shoei is reputed the best peaked lid for road use

My 08 1200 never... ever gets above 43.5mpg according to the trip computer, and that’s with motorways, commuting, North coast 500, Lands’ end never gets above 43.5. Standard bike just a few farkles.
I try and run it on good stuff as I filled up at Morrisons recently and it ran like a bag o shite until I next filled up.

why are people getting 10mpg more ?? :nenau

Here's where the OCD that I referred to earlier kicks in....at every fuel stop, fill to the brim, keep the receipt and borrow a pen to write down the mileage

Run it on an excel spreadsheet and calculate (to as many significant figures as your obsession will allow) to show average and marginal mpg over your general riding history. That way you can see immediately if there are any variations between riding style, fuel type, weather conditions etc....

Just off to line up and sharpen my pencils....

I'm surprised that you believe you bike computer mpg figures.

Have you tried reset trip and fill to brim. Use tankfull and calculate mpg from fuel required to fill to brim and mileage on trip.

Or you could use Fuelly http://www.fuelly.com/

As we all know mpg computers are all out of sync especially if it's got a vw badge :D but seriously if you make a point of refuelling with a specific amount (as post above says) & reset tripometer then you may get a differing result ?

I always brim and use the trip as well!

The peak is quite ridged and with the screen low it's OK for 95mph motorway stuff, it's not as good as the J1 though.

My BMW Enduro helmet was horrid and surprisingly my £100 Nolan off road lid is very good

If the computer is wrong, surely it will be consistently wrong, andstill not solve the OP dilemma. I changed tyres and found that on te Pilot Trails I get 5 MPG better fueling than the conti trail attacks. Both with the computer and manually calculating it. 53.7MPG consistently....I am happy

I recently started a thread on here about mpg from a re-mapped bike.

My TC dropped from high 40's to 40. I always fill and reset trip each time and calculate the mpg myself. It always corresponds with the reading on the computer.

The one thing I never considered was tyres.... I have always run my BMWs on Tourances, then Tourances Next.

I just opted for Bridgestone A40 Battleaxes shortly after the remap. Much more room between the tyre and the mudsling than the old Tourances...... I'm now wondering if they have a different circumference and therefore less mpg???

2006 GS 1200 here, I commute up the M3 from Camberley to London. Been averaging 55mpg, fuel computer has been slightly lower than reality. When I worked it out manually, it was 56.something

Usually get to around 200-210 miles, then fuel warning pops up.

Last tank was Shell, runs really smooth. Had been using Sainsbury as it was local to me, but feels better on Shell. Might have to try super duper stuff, as its commuting normally chuck cheapest stuff in

The BM mpg computer figures are pretty consistent if not entirely accurate. My current one is always about 2 mpg optimistic. So comparisons should be valid. Interesting about the Pliot Trails - I haven't noticed any difference after my switch. I would think tyre pressuers make quite a difference as well. And, of course, the real killer is sticking panniers on.

Am I missing out on something because I couldnt really give two hoots about my fuel consumption? :nenau

As long as it doesn't appear to be unusually high I just go out and enjoy the ride without the worry :thumby:

what you're missing is that we also don't give two hoots about it, its just flagging and pondering over a few some observations which for me are.

how dull my commuting must be to keep returning the same mpg
and how sensitive the GSA seems to me to aerodynamic stuff

I don't think that BMW spent much time in the wind tunnel with a GS and rider.

Perhaps Touratech should be knocking out bits to streamline GSs? I'm sure that the bling addicts would be queuing up to weigh their bikes down.

Average speed according to GPS 53mph

Fuel consumption stock Innova: 113mpg

Fuel consumption streamlined Innova: 237mpg

The future?

I dont think your dull but possibly riding smoother ;), I got 53mpg continually over the 3 years I had the TC GSA:augie, my mate however continues to get 56 :nenau

46mpg average on the trip. It has dropped from 47mpg in the 15,000kms I've done on it since Feb.
