My F800GS is due its 6000 ml service, is this an overrated and overpriced oil and filter change or do I really have to take it to a BMW dealer?

why not give your local dealership a call for a run down and a cost then post it here

Yeah should have been done but wasnt by previous owner, I think ill take it to my not so local dealer (95 miles), it doesnt sound too major, how expensive can it be.
£145 @ Barry Robsons, york.
Mine is due 6000mls service soon too.Was quoted £170 at Williams Manchester.A bit pricey for what it is but on the other hand well worth it as BMW does check the bike and in case something goes wrong (and on BMW it can be anything anytime) gives me an opportunity to rip their b.lls of.
Just found out it's annual plus the 6000miles service.
Had an annual service on my '09 800 in Sept 2010, the bike only had 3500miles on the clock.
Just started getting service reminders on dash so took it to Bmw to have it reset, only to be told i would need a service.
Because i've done effectively 2000miles in 3months or so (bike not used in the snow) there's a possibility of putting a few '000miles on the clock before Sept service date; which would be too long a gap 'apparently'

If you had a service due because it was an annual, then the indicator should have been reset. If you do 6000 miles then the service light should show up, if not it should illuminate in a years time.
My manual schedule states the anniversary date or the mileage that it is due if before that date.
Are you sure you didn't disconnect the battery over the winter? This can upset the service indicator.
Having said that, mine came on about 1000 miles after a service. A quick trip to NOG corrected it, and it next came back on at the right time.
The service is 6000m or 1 year, whichever comes first. If it's come on early, take it back to the dealer and get them to reset. You haven't done a year, but have you done 6000m?
I think your dealer is conning you. My bike had its first service at 814 the next is due in Feb next year or 6814 miles. check your manual it must be stamped, the info must be marked in it, take it with you and get the system reset.
My service indicator shows when I turn on my ignition and it is 01:2012, one month out but good enough for me.
guess i'll just have to pay for two services in 6 months, when i would of only done 2500miles.
