Hi

Has anyone had expereince of front fork corrosion / flaky paint? Bought a new bike recently and whilst most of it is in really good nick (03 plate, 6.5k miles) the forks are not.

Is it a simple case of a repaint, or is there more to be concerned about?

Also, one pannier has been damaged (image attached). I read in one of the forums that a plastic welder is an option to consider. Anyone had to make a similar repair or can recommend someone? I live in Suffolk.

They are almost all like that fella.

Hammerite smooth silver is your friend.

I have a bodged pannier bracket. cause they all do that too :blast:blast:blast

You could make a metal hook to match the otherside, rivet it to the pannier and then put some tape on it where it hooks over the rail (to stop it scratching the rail). :thumb

Did that bike come from the IOW by any chance?

Flipfly, it is reassuring to hear those words!! As for the bracket, thanks for the ideas.

When do you pick it up or have you already got it, It looked like a cracker condition wise I was tempted myself but it was a little over my price range, I bet it sounds sweet with that exhaust, Im looking at trying to source a lower fork cover to try and hide the paint chips on mine, Touratech show one on a bike in their catologue but dont list it, I have emailed them but not yet had a reply, ill let you know, it might be a cheaper option than a repaint.

hi TJ as that flipfly says silver hammerite.

Oscar, I didn't think there were any lower covers for standard forks:confused:
sure you saw the correct forks;)
some people use neoprene or a stickon fabric to protect them

If you look at the picture in the catologue there are a set of lower fork covers I will look at the make in the morning but they are defo on a Dakar as I said I have emailed Touratech but dont expect a reply anytime soon.

Bet ya that they are on the upside down forks :blast:blast:blast

Honestly guys, Remove the wheel and swing the brake caliper out of the way. Pop the seal cover and slide it up the forks. Fill the gap that is left with a piece of cloth or sponge. Clean up the legs with a metal brush or scotchbright, then warm the Hammerite smooth in a bucket of HOT water.
When the can is nice and warm, commence spraying. Allow plenty of time for the paint to dry before applying another coat.

Beauty only costs a small amount of money and a bit more time :thumb

Alternatively, remove the forks, should take ya 15 minutes tops, and spray em indoors!

Pick it up up on 1st March, so can't wait :thumb Looks like the warm hammerite is the route to take, but interested to know about the covers.

Sounds like a plan - cheers!

No body likes a smart arse or an unobservant one either for that matter.

Im sure they could be adapted in some way, Im looking at some carbon fibre ones for a GasGas to see if they can be modded, probrably resign myself to a can of smoothrite though:rob

:P well they bolt to the fork legs,so not easy to adapt.

use some stick on covers but that defeats the object of getting them to look shiny.
or just don't use the bike much they stay nice then:)

i had same issues with my 55 reg one, and exactly the same with the two i have now, so after painting i bought some black sticky vinyl in a roll from local bike shop (oxford products i think) and made covers.

i think you can just make them out on this pic sorry its the best i had:blast
