Hi, had my 650 for a few months now and the last couple of weeks it's hestitated starting, very similar to this thread

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=276807&highlight=starting

but, mine does it several times as though the battery is dead, then after about 10 seconds the starter jumps to life and whirrs the engine over no problem and starts ok, it would appear to be a dead/dying battery.

I tried a jump start off a fully charged battery and it was no different, so I have fitted and charged, a brand new battery this afternoon, and the first start was exactly the same, starter solenoid dropping in and out, dash doing the check several times and not starting. Checked all connections on starter motor, and battery, and all are nice and tight.

Anyone have any ideas please??? don't want to get stranded at work, as I work shifts.

Have you done any other work to the bike recently, maybe you've disturbed a connection. It certainly sounds like a loose connection. I've never checked on mine (no need), but where does the other end of the earth lead connect to the chassis?

I don't think it's the ignition switch, but it could be worth squirting some wd40 down there.

You say you've charged your new battery. Have you ridden it yet, is it fully charged?

I've run out of ideas now.

Common denominator seeing as the battery has been charged/changed = Starter motor, re-check all connections to it and ensure the battery to starter cable is not loose somewhere. if ok.
Next step would be to remove SM and check all is well inside.

Mine does exactly the same!!! I thought the battery was on the way out too, even though its only 7 months old. But took it in for a service last week and its was fine until today, same thing! Its been doing it for ages, so doubt its the battery. I also notice than after it cranks, the digi read out goes back to the time and mileage (not trip meter) as if the battery had been disconnected, mmmm??

You can hear the starter kick in, then it pauses, almost as if it hasntgot enough power to turn it over, just like a flat battery

If the battery is good, wiring is tight, then the starter is next to check.

What else is there? (unless you really do have a dud battery)

Logical step after this is engine related so just do the cheap/easy stuff first.

Or am I missing something here.:blast:blast

Just because you have bought a new battery doesn't mean it is fully charged, please don't forget they are left on the shelf for months before you walk up to the shop and buy one.
To ensure that you have the correct charge and umph fully charge both batteries that you have now and use jump leads, DONT DONT use a car.
If after the two batteries are fully charged and connected together and it still has erratic start then re-check ALL connections, this means disconnection and cleaning of the two surfaces, whilst doing that put the batteries on charge again...If you still have erratic start then look at another starter motor
Always do the cheapest option first, your time is free but buying "stuff" when not needed gets expensive...
If you have a multi meter that would help ..

Thanks, yes I happen to have a couple of new batteries dry charged from new, and bought last year by mistake, gave it 3 hours charge, and then fitted, also had the previous battery (which was fitted new before I bought it this year (May time, and a Yuasa) on a trickle charger, for a whole day, ok on the first srart, then this problem continues

I loose the display totally and everything goes blank like the battery has been disconnected, then all normal and it whirrs over and starts like normal, does anyone know where the solenoid is please, all connections battery and satrter motor are tight and solid, off to work now to give it another go, and a full charger tomorrow again when I get home (I jumped it off a known good gel battery and it was like it wasn't even connected, although the connections were good)

Just wonded if it's the canbus shutting down due to it seeing a loss of voltage? if that what it can do??

The solonoid is situated on the Starter - what those wires usually connect to. Take the starter motor off and have a look at it, the engagement of this seems to be drawing all the current avaliable, as a result the canbus may well be shutting down = starter being faulty. Once the starter has been checked and proven it;s ok, then look elsewhere. (see it's cost nothing to do this)

Well to be honest it does sound like the starter motor windings have melted.
If after the two battery's have been charges and then coupled together and the starter motor spun normally for the first time, then dead as a doe-doe on the second push then I would say its the windings.
Do you know anyone else with the same bike as you ( swap starter motors ) to guarantee that's the problem, OR take it to an engineering co to check Not repair...If you are sure its the starter then you have two choices....
Repair or replace..
As always keep us posted...Tosh

Mine started with no problems last night and again this morning, going to leave it this weekend, without the optimate on, and see what happens next week, it should be colder as well, so this will give the battery some extra work, but with a new battery and a full charge it's looking good again. Looks like the new Yuasa has only lasted less than 6 months.
