I had a short ride on the new BMW 650x today and would have to say it is bloody high to get on. It's much higher than the HP and the bike had been lowered down the front forks. The 650 was very light and had some good points, but I love the HP.

You have to put the side stand up first before you get on the 650 as the stand is a prick of a thing to get up once you are on the bike. I did like the rubber mounted indicator lights. I may get a set for the HP. The seat was very hard like setting on a timber plank. It could be a fun bike for trail riding.

I may look at the new BMW 450 when it comes out next year only as a trail bike. I'm thinking of getting out of the 1200RT as I'm enjoying the HP more and with the road wheels on it corners so sharp. I may try a differant screen for the road riding as well New Zealand is so small you don't need the long range tank and I've always been a adventure/trial bike rider.

Agree - 650X is very tall but quite a nice ride, although once you have an HP2 pretty much everything else pales in comparison. Did I mention that the 650X is quite tall? - and I'm over 6'. I like the idea of the 450 as a second bike, but a more moderately priced XR or similar might be the go for me. You've had the RT for too long now anyway :blast

When are we going to see a photo of the new HP with all extras fitted. It looks like the last HP in Auckland has been sold.

We should get a central North Island ride organised soon.:clap

F650X was at my dealer before being quickly sold. Sweet. Seat height is just about the same as the HP2... X: 36.6", HP2: 36.2" (English) according to BMW NA's home page.

Strange it would feel so high, could be the rear suspension not settling as much as the HP2 - I ride with mine a bit high but I max the pre load on all my bikes to get them to sit up a bit at the back. I am around 6'-3"

I am on the HP2 today for work, the fog made life difficult, so I ended up riding visor up which was bloody cold and wet, car drivers were idiots as normal, roads bumpy as hell, but I never noticed the seat, in fact, I never notice the seat, unlike the Berg or KTM's I have owned in the past

The new 650 looks the part, but how do BMW think they can sell a bike to off roaders with a sump plug lower than the guard. OK only by about 1/2mm, but the first heavy landing on rocky terrain, or sliding over a rock step is going to cause serious damage. Expect to see aftermarket sump guards soon.

What seat?Just a brick. That things comes with no seat that you can sit on.
And no meaning to test ride anything really for HP2ers.Just an exercise of politeness when they ask for your opinion afterwards.:)

Hehe! The seat on the HP2 is not so bad, but yes you are quite right, getting dealers to let you test ride the HP is quite difficult.

I called into my local one today for a cup of tea and took a look at the new 650X bikes.

Bugger - that was an expensive cup of tea but the wife is happy, she gets a X-Country and more to the point she does not get to ride my bike :)

Ermm not that I would mind of course

woops...sorry

What did i say?My english maybe...
-The seat on the 650X is like a brick.Nonexistant.
-A HP2 rider/owner won't be excited.Sure it's a good bike but it's a waste of time for a HP2 rider to test ride it.

It's never a waste of time to test a new bike, I'll keep testing until I find a bike better than my HP and if I don't I'll enjoy getting back on the HP:thumb after test riding another bike:nenau
