690 Enduro R or 950 SE?

Yes, Malteser on advrider has not taken to it...... he says he can put is 990adv where he can put the 690.
I've seen my friend take his 950Adv some pretty crazy places but I find it hard to imagine it going everywhere a 690 can go!
I guess it's the getting it out when it goes wrong that you're really gonna see the difference between them...

690 is a great off road bike - no question. You'll not regret buying one, but 5 years after selling it it will be forgotten.
The SE you'll remember on your death bed. Which to be fair, may be fairly soon after buying it
The SE has taken me every where on and off road, AND can get me back up through France with no bother.
I can only have one bike, and a 690 would not be enough for me.

Had a 690 and it was a great bike. I now have an SE which I absolutely love and does everything I need.
The 690 has been lots of places including riding across europe and off roading in Portugal.
I found the comfort just too unbearable in the end despite trying all the usual things to inprove it. It was also a bit cramped when loaded with luggage. (And used to piss me right off having to undo your luggage to fill up with fuel!)
Thats how I ended up with the SE.
Would I go back to the 690? Yes I probably would if I ever got rid of the SE and like Markie could only have one bike.

For 1st year of BBRC use 690
For BBRC 2012 I would go for the lighter more usable 690 it would appear to be the bike of choice at BBRC, your have a more enjoyable time and finishes on the 690 and if you do 2012 on a 690 your have the knowledge to know weather the 950SE is for you and maybe BBRC in 2013.
There are a few leaving twins class going to singles next year, didbob69 is a big lad 6ft 2in and 15st who is planning to go 690R himself but he really enjoyed himself on the 950SE at the K2 rally on those fire roads this year, I did 4 rounds of BBRC myself on a LC4 Adv had a big learning curve.

Looking at selling my 1150GSA and getting a 690R enduro in Feb / March to do a bit more trail / green laneing
Is there much real world difference between the 2009 / 10 / or 11 models ??
Or is it just a case of getting the latest model for the money I want to pay ??

You might want to think about a nicely sorted, BBRC ready, 640 Adventure...........

The 640 ADV is a nice bike but I just don't need that fuel capacity.
Still not decided either way although Mav texting me about SE's has his stall firmly set out!
I think I need to sell the dak, sort out funds and then start looking properly.

That's why I swapped my SE for a 690, even at 5'10" with long legs for my height and 1/2" of seat foam removed, I could barely touch the ground with both boot tips at the same time. No problem on fast open trails but deep ruts and thick mud combined with 200kg & 90bhp made it hard to control for me.
I also found the SE underbraked for the road, the 690 has the same braking set-up but weighs 50kg less.
Saying that, I enjoyed my time with the SE, rode it to Spain and Italy, the fuel capacity was never an issue and riding it was amusing to say the least.
The 640 ADV is a nice bike but I just don't need that fuel capacity.
I only filled it to the top once, couldn't push the fecker into the van then!
Tend to put 15 litres in so I don't have to worry about fuel for the day, and the weight is carried low so not that noticeable.

If you are riding on the roads and the mid wales areas then the se is amazing.
If you want to ride tricky north wales stuff then buy something like a 400exc.
The 690 can do both, I've ridden louisdut's 690 and it's good.
Either bike will be a massive improvement on the dakar.
I'm in Hereford if you want to have a look at the se up close and louis is in worcester.

690 or SE or both are itches that will be scratched, but the impending arrival of another baby has put it on hold for the moment. The Dakar is being improved with 46mm usd forks and a new rear shock/spring when I get time. Hopefully the fork upgrade is going to be ready for the rally moto sprint on 1st April or I'm going to be a spectator.
