I have just taken my 62 plate GSA in for its 1yr/6k service to my usual dealer in Dorset who I have always been really impressed with previously. When I booked it in and gave them all the details i was quoted £290 for the work - which I took on the chin even though I thought it sounded expensive. However when I came to collect the bike the price had increased to £350 !! I queried this and was told that it was because they had to change all brake fluids at the 1yr service/inspection. They knew this when they quoted surely. I said that I wasnt impressed with the price but as I was in a rush I paid and left. It has bugged me all weekend and now I read posts about costs on here that are sooo much cheaper! has anyone else had an invoice anywhere near this price for the service? It has really made me think about trading this bike in next spring when the warranty is nearly up and going Japanese again as the labour costs seem considerably less and im thinking is it really worth this cost for service plus £300 for extended warranty every year :(
For info the dealer was charging just over £100 per hr inc VAT - what do other BMW dealerships charge

Have you got back to them today, possibly by e-mail, pointing out your disappointment? They do have a very good reputation, so that would be my first action.

Unfortunately they dont open on Mondays, but that will be my course of action during the week. One of the reasons for this post was to see whether this sort of cost was the norm before I start complaining too much (although the increase between quote and charge is still out of order).
I also agree that their reputation is second to none and this is the second bike I have had from them and until this weekend I have never had a negative word to say.

I've never been charged over and above the service quote unless it was something they found and called me about to get approval for. The key point is they should out of courtesy call you to discuss any additional work that is required over and above any quote so you have the choice. The last service actually cost me less than the price they quoted which was a surprise.

600 miles service - £117.61
6k service - £259.52
12k service - £340.00 (Brake fluid change)
18k service - £280.93
24k service - £315.04

Any additional work carried out must be agreed by you. Therefore you have a right to a refund of the difference. Stand your ground. If that work is not part of the service and you have not agreed to it, dealer should stand the cost. Dealer needs to have better communication between reception, workshop controller & tech.:rob

Try my KTM 990 Adventure

£475 every other 4000 miles + £190 every other 4000 miles = £665 every 8000 miles

= £498.75 every 6000

= 8.3 p per mile in service costs alone

Vs

5p per mile for GS (based on Blobby's figures)

seems cheap to me :nenau

go to Steptoe just off the A3 in South London.... i go there from Portsmouth...

Ok, you dont get a coffee, the loan bikes are shonkers and he can be rude.... but his work is first class and much less then the price of a dealer.... (no fancy demo bike/coffee etc to pay for) ... .... :D

Well focused rudeness should be considered an art form, a pleasure to behold,an expression of a person at the top of his game, a craftsman, if you want "nice", go to a dealer.
Better put a :D

FWIW I've been quoted £313.73 (including valve clearance check, gearbox oil and brake fluid change) by Williams BMW in Manchester-bike goes in on Friday and I get a loan bike whilst its in.

Some disparity in prices so it seems

if its under the warrantee then you will have to pay it,mine is a 2010 and out of warrantee now,i did it my self, here is the cost of the bits plugs twenty quid, oil twenty quid, oil fiter eleven quid, air filter tenner, gearbox oil and f/d oil tenner, propper grease for f/d splines eight quid .
all these prices are just rough but you get the picture.

If i can't get hold of the customer and i consider the part needs replacing i'll fit it. If the customer doesn't like it i'll put their old part back on. :D

Are you calling an R1150R with 13k miles on the clock a shonker ?

And the K100RT maybe old but i'd set off around the world on it tomorrow with no worries. :D

No you don't. As long as the service guy is VAT registered and uses BMW parts, your warranty is good. Great advice for the OP to use Steptoe if he isn't happy with the dealer prices.

Please remember that with a dealer you will pay a high hourly rate because they have huge overheads to pay. If you are unhappy, go back and speak to them let them know as that is the only way you can get any recompense if that is what you are after. I'd also be asking them why they did an annual as well as a 6k. The annuals are there if you don't cover 6k per year and is their safety net to make sure get the bike looked at regularly

Anyway, you've just paid 13k + for a bike and you are quibbling over a few quid:nenau If you spend a bit of time looking at jap servicing, you will find the service costs will be the same of higher. They may have slightly lower hourly rates but they need to do more work to service the bike. The GS is quick and easy to maintain and you aren't pulling panels off everywhere to get at the plugs and heads.

Also, have a serious think whether you need the extended warranty? If you take this you will have to get it dealer serviced. Put the £300 in a pot and get it serviced by Steptoe. You will be saving money and if you should have a problem, you will have a slush fund to help cover the potential bill:thumby:

Sorry, forget you sold the shonker to Fanum....(i think, could be talking shite though... no change there...i'm talking about the lovely red RS... )

Been quoted £380 for the 18k service including brake fluid and rear drive oil change, good or bad?

Seems expensive to me!
