700 Tenere

I had the OEM front tyre replaced yesterday by dealer, as the original Pirelli Rally STR was faulty (wobble side to side movement, even though wheel is ok and tyre was seated correctly), guess what, this one has the same issue. I wont be pursuing another replacement, as it too much agro, will look at another manufacture, maybe Michelin Anakee Wilds or Bridgestone.

Good news, dealer mechanic liked my 3M Tubeless conversion and internal TPMS, said it was in perfect condition, no leaks since fitted 2000 miles ago.

That’s weird.
I ran STRs on my 790R and ATAS.
Absolutely loved them.
Despite the blocky appearance they are great onroad, and good on tracks.Bit noisy is only negative.
Having ran Conti TA2s for a decade and also TKC70s, the STRs are by far my favourite.
Wanted to replace them on my ATAS and they couldn’t source the front 90/90-21 with a month notice before my Spain/Portugal trip.
Ended up going with Conti TA3s and I really am not impressed.
Not very stable in a straight line, don’t give much front end feedback and to call them ‘Trail Attack’ is a joke as they have fuck all grip on a trail.Think the TA2s were better.
Definitely going back to STRs next time.

There has been a few reports about a front wheel wobble but mine has been perfect and those tyres are as good or better than any other even slight off road bias tyres.

Hope my free tyre replacement is ok then

OE tyres are supposedly not always the same quality as when replaced like for like .
Dunno why but do manufacturers get a slightly inferior product when they buy in bulk ?

Don’t know, but it was a warranty replacement, but my dealer did say that Yamaha UK told them to contact Pirelli. I don’t know how true that is, but it took sometime to get a replacement and has same issue. The correct tyre pressure in the manual is 32psi, if I run it at that pressure, the tyre feels awful, so I’m having to run at 36psi to reduce the wobble, but that obviously has an impact on ride comfort. I see there was a guy on youtube, had the very same issue with his Pirelli Rally STR. He wanted another make of tyre, but dealer wouldn’t do that, so he paid for a tyre, think it was an Mitas or similar and the problem went away.

Here we go, lets just say he’s a happy happy now!

My front tyre has a wobble too, there seems to be an issue with some of these Pirelli Rally STR’s. Mines not too bad and to be honest, the wheel isn't perfectly round, but within manufacturers spec (which is better than bmw’s). I’ve done almost 2500 miles in 2 months and just cant be arsed going through what shedracer did, so I’ll change them over to maybe some Battlax AX41 adventurecross or Anakee Wilds next Sping.

Anyone had either of the above tyres and can add as to what they think of them on wet roads and wet grass please.

Interestingly enough I phoned a local place where I get my tyres and he said that Pirelli were showing that they had no STR's on their website yet I can go on ebay and get one, I wonder if Pirelli have got shot of the dodgy ones and are awaiting getting a new batch made.

You wouldn’t expect manufacturer’s would do such a thing, but who knows. Many tyre manufacturers have numerous factories in various countries, and make the same tyre for different markets, some factories make better tyres than others! All I know for certain, the two Pirelli Rally STR’s that I’ve had (original OEM and replacement), both are wonky!

I'm not disputing it, I guess every tyre manufacturer has issues from time to time, mine have been perfect, you were obviously unlucky.

Probably the same for head bearings :-)
They lasted 2 months though-I can see what you mean about the Tenere having quality suspension components :-)

They weren't installed correctly at the factory, nothing to do with them not lasting

GPS and SATNAV on a T7

Anybody fitted a Nav or GPS device on the mounting bar above the clocks?
I've tried today with a BMW mount for a Zumo 660-- not enough clearance unless the mount is tilted right back at 45°.
Likewise with a Touratech locking mount for the 660-- there just isn't enough space between the mounting bar and the top of the LCD housing.

In both pics the brackets are touching the top of the LCD housing.

Yes I've mounted mine and it now points rather skyward :blast not great but manageable. I did have it on via ram mounts but bought a rally raid specific holder that is what caused the skyward issue

I’ve used a Rally Raid gps mount for a zumo XT.

Same here. Rally Raid also provide a spacer which keeps the Zumo away from the Speedo console. :thumb2
