Seems we need to apply for passes for the bikes to access the Normandy area between 4th and the 10th of June French plod will be checking at various points that you have the pass displayed, see link for details and to apply for the "Accreditation pass".

http://dday70.wordpress.com/2014/04/03/mod-dday70-accreditation-form-available/

It won't be the whole area or the whole week, just the official international ceremony, which I think is being held in Ouistreham this year. Official ceremonies in the bigger towns i.e. Caen and Bayeux, might also be invitation only and therefore roads closed unless you're accredited, but that will only be for the day of the ceremony. This is was the case for the 60th anyway. I'm going to try and get accreditation. So cheers for the link. If not I'll find a pub along the beaches and find some Vets to drink with like I did in 2008.

Hey Easyrider5258 (Weathermike)

Me and Mrs B have just decided to come along to the 70th D-Day Anniversary, booked cheap P&O ferry via Dover-Calais (£36 saver return using P&O discount code YYWLAH6DBF) but Camping Cote de Nacre campsite seems full from 5-8 June so we'll be somewhere local (hopefully the Mer & Vacances, Avenue de la liberation, 14830 LANGRUNE-SUR-MER). Grateful if you'd post your itinerary so Lou and I can catch up with you Tossers when we get there!
Cheers

Only one organised "Ride to" and your welcome to join, for the rest of the holiday most prefer to wander about doing their own thing using the campsite as a base, details below for the ride to;

Pleased to give details of the ride to see the massed international parachute drop on Sunday 08/06/2014

The not-to-be missed annual show, part of the June 6th festivities: mass military and civilian parachute jump.

Several nationalities will be represented (United States, France, Germany, the Netherlands, etc.) on the historic site of La Fière (drop zone in 1944). The parachute jump will precede the official ceremony that takes place on the same site, at the Monument Iron Mike. Food and music available on site all day.

Sunday June 8th – 10am-6pm – La Fière – Sainte-Mère-Eglise

Ride to this event will leave Camping Cote de Nacre at 9am, 52 miles to destination, full tanks please, free to return at your own pace / route,

Bike parking last time was in a soft field side stand support advised!

Some suggest that the Airborne museum in Sainte-Mère-Égliseis is worth a look on the way back.

Thanks EasyRider, we've had trouble finding a pitch at a nearby campsite (or at least at a reasonable price!) so we've just booked into a B&B (La Galante) in Lion-sur-Mer which isn't too far away - so we'll grab a taxi one night and join you in the campsite bar! Sadly we have to depart from Calais at 1520hrs on Sunday 8 June so sounds like we might miss the mass jump although I guess there must be something similar on the 6 June? We've applied for our accreditation passes so should be able to get around the main sites - although sounds like traffic might be a nightmare!? Are you going to post details of the ride to Pegasus Bridge, I went there a few years ago on my first Euro bike trip so would love to go back with Louise this time.
Cheers

Restricted Area.

Rough Translation.

It's the "Nostalgia" radio in Caen who unveiled this Friday morning in its newspaper outline of the traffic plan.
A "controlled circulation" area should be implemented. This area will be 60 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide, and extend along the coast of Ranville and Ouistreham, in the East, to Grandcamp-Maisy, West. 140 communes are included in this area (including Bayeux, but not Caen).
Residents and professionals must obtain from their town hall a sticker to stick on their vehicle to be able to circulate.
It should be noted that two main axes will be banned from circulation a large part of the day of June 6: the RN 13 between Caen and Isigny-sur-mer, and the double track(dual carriageway) between Caen and Ouistreham.
More details, listen to the nostalgia Caen info log.
Reminder: it is at Ouistreham that will take place the international ceremony of the 70th anniversary of the landings, in the presence of 15 heads of State, including US president Obama.

Re; The Pegasus Bridge ride, after thought and considering traffic and potential restrictions I am going to say that it will be up to individuals to make their own arrangements to visit Pegasus Bridge, it will be much simpler than trying to get 30 plus bikes there! and you can do it when it suits you.

The ride to the massed para drop on Sunday the 8th is still on though:thumb2

Thanks EasyRider, from what I can see about the traffic that's a sensible plan. Our B&B fell through and the closest accn we can find is an F1 in Le Havre! We will still try and get to the campsite and say hello at some point so let us know which day/evening is best.
Cheers

On the 6th June the Zenith IMAX, Caen are showing a 40 minute 3D Documentary 'D-Day Normandy 1944'.

Tickets are FREE. I knew of 3 evening showings but they're full. However, when I contacted them they offered me a morning showing, which I snapped up - they're going VERY quickly.

If you want a ticket get in there now. Contact the Calvados General Council who will mail you the tickets - if there are any left...

I received an email from the site with 2 docs attached to fill out and return to the mayors office by the 24th of May, with a sae to receive your sticker to allow travel on the 6th of June, its a bit to late to meet that deadline and I'm not sure its worth worrying about. I don't see how sending a English stamped address envelope will get returned though the French postal system!???

The sticker as I understand it only is for main areas of the commemoration where all the dignitaries and ceremony's will be on the 6th of June.
Personally I wont bother with the sticker, but if you or anyone else wants a copy of the docs I received please pm me your email address and I will happily send you an email with attachments (They are to big to post on here)

Its possible I suppose to take the form along to the local council office ( Town council 41 rue du Maréchal Joffre, 14750 Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer FRANCE.) and collect a sticker before the 6th of June.

Looking forward to this 70th anniversary trip and getting abroad once again on the bike, hope everyone has a safe trip over and looking forward to meeting up on the site, searching the web for events there certainly seems plenty on, look out for the recreation military camps they are worth a look, the attention to detail is amazing!, on the 65th anniversary the town Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer had a military vehicle parade that was good hopefully it will be repeated this year, probably best to avoid the centre of the official ceromonys (Arromanches-les-Bains?) as it will be heaving on the 6th of June, but there will plenty on up and down the coast, fireworks in our local town on the eve of the 6th (Walking Distance from the camp)
