Evening chaps

I have an interesting problem that you might be able to help me with.

I'm working on a friend's R90S that was presented to me as "not starting".

(A very nice find BTW - twin plugged, electronic ignition conversion and the heads look like they've been worked on too, in very good condition with original mustard and silver paintwork).

So having rebuilt the brakes that were seized solid, and the battery that was deado, and the starter relay that was full of water ... nothing. Quick check show all the wiring checks out ok, and the starter motor operates fine.

On removing the old starter relay, I carefully numbered each of the wires and connectors, and replaced them as I found them. I have a nasty feeling that how I found 'em isn't how they were meant to be.

So can anyone take a gander at their starter relay and tell me which colour wire goes where?

And before you ask, Clymer wiring diag doesn't help ...

Cheers aye

Easy way to check if it's relay or solenoid..
Wire to live terminal. put an inline switch in it, connect other end [switched off] to the small terminal on solenoid... try switch, if nothing solenoid is fecked, if it throws bendix in and turns engine, it's in the starter relay or starter switch, kill button side of things...

All this will only be of use if you are sure the starter works..
(test by putting feck off heavy duty live wire onto the starter side of the solenoid]
Sparkly :D:D:D

Yup, done all that and diagnosed it was the relay - I even took the old 'un apart and about 20ml of water came out of it ...

Problem is that I have a shiny new starter relay that when connected up as per the old 'un doesn't work. All the other checks are fine, so I think someone messed with the connections, put 'em back wrong, and left it ... for me to find.

All I need is a photo of the underneath of a starter relay to work out whihc wires should go where and I'm sure that'll do it.

Just remember that BMW fitted more than one relay to Aiurheads.

They both do the same thing but the numbers/ terminals may be in a different place, and if you have a plug in mount the wires on the mount require swapping around. DAHIK

You're right, and the one I have is slightly different from the one in the ADVRider thread, but cable colour plus terminal number gives me enough info to see that two have been swapped on the bike I'm working on.

The Source of info

For future reference, a definitive resource for starter relay connections can be found here
