Have an 09 model 800 GS which has pitting on both the front brake disks- in the same place on each disk? Took it into Mr BMW and showed them - after taking pictures of the pitting to send it off - they poured over the bike to look for any other signs of corrosion. There is some light rust by the footpeg (not suprising as its steel) on one side and a little bit of the black metal coating has come off on the rear swing arm by the main bolt for the rear wheel (may have been while taking the wheel off!).
I was told by the Dealer - who told me he had been trained in Warranty Claims - that the bike may have st0od for a while and in a damp condition that the sintered front pads could have reacted with the high carbon content of the front disks causing the pitting! and not to worry. How ever they will send the pictures off to BMW for an opinion (including the other areas of light corrosion) ...
My question/s - has any one else experienced this type of pitting on this or any other bike? Is it likely to be from previous owner abuse (use in winter salt corrosion) and is their excuse for the pitting likely? Or is this another example of poor manufacturing standards by our friends again. Not hopeful to be honest.
Thanks any advice - thoughts - experience appreciated. :nenau

I have pitting marks yeah, deep scratches is how I'd describe them. Just dip the brakes on whilst maintaining a nice speed & clean the front pads using ABS action.

Jabbing front brake on & off at high speed, under full control (Safe roads you know). Should clear debris off of pads, do you do lots of offroading/gravel tracks?.

Minutes before a general winter clean :bounce1

Pitting

I've had the same before. It was the pads reacting with metal of the discs, when I put it away after being washed and not using it for a while. I've learnt my lesson and now dry the discs off, leave them a short while, then dry them again.

Hi Paddy. I noticed that the rear bolt covers seem to be held on with tie wraps? Is that how they are supposed to be mounted? Or have have you had problems with them staying on?

Each one is £45 bud so I prefer spending a little extra on keeping them. One has been split by service people so it now really needs zipping up. My electronics have metal zipties.

Brake Pitting ?

Thanks for reply - dont have pics as its 40 miles away in mates garage, however it seems perhaps it may have been use rather than manufacture! and love the pics its a machine that has been used like it was designed to be ...

Are the brakes bad due to the pitting? I.e do the brakes judder, don't bite, etc? If not, I wouldn't worry.
Do a few hard stops to try it out. The brakes really like being used hard from time to time.

With regards to washing, I tend to ride the bike up and down the street a few times and brake hard until the disk is really hot and evaporates the water. However, it's a lot more difficult to get the pads totally dry - they still might bite like dry - but there's often moisture still around. A little ride around town usually fixes that.

How much? Are they worth the cash?

Cheers
