800GS under two years old and the stickers are peeling off...

I have bought a 800gs with 4 months of the manufactures warranty left on it. With two months gone both "F800GS" stickers are peeling off and BMW are telling me that they are not prepared to cover it under the warranty because I have bought it from an independent dealer. I think that the stickers should last the lifetime of the bike, let alone less than two years. Has anyone else had problems with either stickers or warranty issues with BMW ?
 
I saw a brand new one in a showroom with peeling stickers.

If they think they can fob you off with such a ridiculous reason, they will. The bike is either covered by warranty or it's not. Who you bought it from is totally irrelevant.

Fortunately I subscribe to Which Legal Service (Consumer Association) who tell me how to deal with such people who try to wriggle out of their legal obligations.

If you'd bought it privately, had it given you as present or won it in a lucky-bag, it wouldn't affect the warranty.
 
Hi, the stickers are £28 per side i tinks! i would have thought stickers after such time would not be covered under warranty myself, as when peeps run a cloth over the sticker area when cleaning, it could end up lifting the edge of the sticker and over time get worse!!

Im also a newb to the f800gs ive recently (3-weeks) brought a 2008 bike it only had 2k on the clock i brought it private it was advertised as immaculate on evilbay and was a 760 mile round trip to collect it so when i got there i just loaded it up and off i went but when i got the bike home and gave it a real clean as i have a OCD! i noticed the paint on the engine casings/sump and block was lumpy ie lifted and the bike only had 1 month remaining on the warranty, however after a visit to my dealer and some photo's sent to bmw with my warranty claim, the nxt day i had a call from the dealer stating they had the go-ahead to do what ever to put it right and was told there going to put a new engine in it on my return from spain, and this week ive had the invite to extend the warranty this i gladly paid so the warranty is on the bike and not the person so it should not make any difference who makes the claim.

Good for you Dave :thumb2, I agree and same as what you and others above stated the warranty is for the bike not the owner. Most companies have gate keepers on the front line who tell you the computer says no. dont accept the Fob off. my warranty expires 25.9.10 and I have had my renewal which I will be taking out :D piece of mind :D.

Sorry about not posting pics, the bike has been at Motorrad for over 12 days now because I brought it back to find out why it didn't sound like it was running right. It took them a week to get back to me, now they are waiting for parts from Germany etc. I hope to hear from them soon.....

Thanks Tim, They told me that the previous owner may have used chemicals or a power washer and they would not cover it. (fob fob fob....) I guess the bike with peeling stickers in the showroom would not have been sold like that and they had been put on incorrectly. BMW said they had to check whether there was cover because it was very rare that stickers peeled off in the lifetime of their bikes, surely this means that I should be covered if the stickers are expected to last that long ?

Thanks Dave, I posted because I thought a manufactures warranty would cover this and not because of the prices involved. I think BMW are tightening up and think fobing me off for this money is their idea of catering for customer satisfaction. I'm not too into the cosmetics because I prefer to ride the bike rather than look at it but I am concerned about this issue affecting selling the bike on if it comes to it (which it prob won't, I love the bike !!!)
 
In all seriousness though, how far does this 'cosmetic' warranty have to go?

These bikes are designed for a little 'rough and tumble' and will - if used for purpose - pick up a few marks and battle scars along the way. It's not as though we're talking about an R1200LT fercrissakes ...

A sticker peeling ...? A bit of paint rubbing off a panel...? :comfort

I'm saying nothing about "Shoulda bought a Harley" but ... :rolleyes:
 
Muc Off

i was warned about Muc off being to strong and could peel stickers off bikes
thought what a load of shite
but
i googled it and came across a push bike forum that confirmed Muc Off undiluted has the ability over time to peel stickers off
BMW are aware of this so if they ask what cleaner you use dont mention Muc Off
easyway round it is to dilute Muc Off 50/50 with water
you win cos you end up with twice the amount :thumb2

Before i made the claim i ran my problem past google and lots of 08 bikes had paint issue its something to do with the way bmw applied the paint to the engine it reacts,TBH now that ive farkled it up with engine bars and oil cool guards and so on the worst cannot be seen, i pointed it out to my mate and he said his triumph was worse! and so at 1st they was going to replace any cases that had issues but the back of the block has paint issues and around the heads where they meet together the paint has bubbled, so the dealer said due to having to put new heads they will have to put pistons in as well, i was told bmw do not have fully built up engines the dealer has to order every part and build themself, i would think they are going to use my gearbox and internals but who knows, ill know more after the 16 oct when im back from spain and the bike goes into the dealers.

The above issues was found on my 1st day of ownership but it never put me off its a great bike and now ive done various mods seats, screens, ive changed the indicator cancel switch to the horn switch and vice-versa and swopped the red and grey buttons around to match what they do, and now i can hit the cancel without effecting the throttle postion(i did this mod on my k12r its great) i cut the cat in half removed and welded back up and even with stock end can it sounds very nice and has up'd the performace .

I'd be interested over what time it causes this - I've used Muc from new and after 2 1/2 years every piece of paintwork and sticker is in "as new" form. :nenau
 
Bm_donator i was also asked what i clean the bike with by bmw however i was fully aware about muc off and what it does as there have been issues with 1200gs and corrosion due to use of muc off (look in the 1200 section) and bmw regect the warranty claim by chance i use S-DOC so as motorad also put there name to this brand they cant regect on them grounds.

So never tell em you use muc off ;)

I got a similar problem on similar age bike with paint wearing through on plastic panels, where the knees touch them:mad:
Has anyone else had the same problem and will BMW sort it :confused:

I think I may have to rehearse my 'fit for purpose' rant :D
