850GS oil leak

I have a 2000 850GS with 7000 miles on the clock. It has developed what appears to be an oil leak towards the rear of the engine. The oil drips onto the exhaust collector box beneath the engine and then vapourises in the heat from the exhaust. Could the problem be anything to do with the shaft drive or gearbox? The oil is clear (does not appear to be engine oil) and I am concerned that oil spray could get on to the rear tyre! Has anyone come across something similar? Ultimately, I will be putting the bike to Calterdons for investigation/repair I think!
