'91 R100GS Oil Cooler - can I do without?

Mainly for off road

I have an aftermarket oil cooler installed. it pays itself only in offroad situations, and maybe extreme traffic in high summer (here, it's HOT).

OTOH, in cold winter days on road the motor is too cold! in these stuations I tape over the cooler, to let the oil reach reasonable temp. No thermostat as you might understand.

Now I'm very seriously considering the idea of a Thermostat and an aftermarket cooler.
Further research required, but it seems to be worth the money.

If you go down that route, pick up the thermostat from say HPN and then a fitting kit for the stock oil cooler ebay (check that your hose connections are not seized if they are replace with standard oil cooler) Have your own oil lines with stainless ends made, and have the braiding covered to save frame paint and protect the lines, try Pertek (yellow pages for the lines they will make them to length

I will certainly agree with Bam Bam (he's bigger than me ) .....but, say on my previous 100RS mono, which had an oil cooler fitted centrally, I was always a bit concerned if I was stuck in heavy traffic in the middle of summer ( remember summer). The engine note would definitely change a bit, and sound just a bit more noisy than normal. Now I know the RS had a lot of fairing around the engine, but the engine could get pretty hot, so I wouldn't like to suggest removing the oil cooler -I guess it depends on the type of riding to some extent.
An oil temp and pressure gauge would be a good idea-even on the 1150, stuck in traffic in hot weather, the temp would rise, once it went into the "danger zone" and I imagine that having the oil cooler meant that as soon as you were able to get an air flow over the engine , and the cooler, then the temp would drop.

I know it might sound like a stupid idea. But you could always fit a fan to the cooler to draw air through in those warmer situations.

Anyway, this issue with fitting the cooler behind the hi mudguard. Where do you think the Japs put theirs?

I was more thinking I might not have space for it - Rather than it not getting enough air behind the mudguard.
Although I have found one from another bike that is smaller and will do nicely
