Today marks the end of the first month with my '04 Adventure. I thought I'd share my thoughts with the great and good and report on how things are shaping up.

I collected the bike from Edinburgh (23105 miles on the clock) a month ago and rode it back to Kent in glorious winter sunshine. During the ride back, there were no significant issues and the trip was uneventful. For me, the period immediately after I've done a private deal on a used bike is always the most nerve wracking, 'have I bought a lemon?' etc, I start 'hearing' mechanical noises, knockings and lord know what else in those first few miles.

Once home, I noticed a small but irritating issue with the low speed handling, and replaced the bearings in the front wheel and the steering head (ta CT!) and gave the bike an oil change. Later on a faulty clutch master cylinder cured a grabby clutch. I've managed to talk round a sulking Scottoiler, and CT blasted a pint or so of water out of my horn, which improved it's performance immeasurably. I've enjoyed working on the bike and fixing the issues that have presented themselves and have started to learn more about the foibles and mysteries of my KTM, it feel goods to know that jobs have been done and done well.

The riding experience has been a complete blast, I don't think I've ever had this much fun riding and I'm over the moon with the bike, which is starting to feel very much like 'my bike' if you get my drift. 1415 miles in the first month and looking forward to a few more over the summer.

I'm cleaning and tidying up the bike as I go and, taking inspiration from tunneruk's 950, decided yesterday to refinish the skid pan on the bike, which was looking a little tired. Bit of rubbing down, a bit of acid etch and some Plastikote Satin Super for pud.
I think it's come up well, and the finish is guaranteed to last at least until I get to end of my road!

If anyone out there is thinking of a 950, my recommendation (for what it's worth) is to stop buggering around a get hold of one before the summer! It's a great bike.

They are fun bikes, great on road and awesome off. There's a few bikes meeting on Salisbury Plain in April...a 690 , my XC and rumour has it a 1190R.. welcome to join in. Always around the green lanes in Kent too :thumb2

..that was a nice write up Nevil. I am back to the KTM fold after selling my early 950 a fair few years ago. The 'new to me' 06 990 bought from Longjohn on this site, has been the best bike purchase I have made in years. I open the garage every morning to get my mountain bike out for work, but I see the KATOOM and just want to go and ride for the sake of riding. That probably sums up how suitable and enjoyable the bike is for my needs and riding style. Superb value and fun.

Hi Nevil, interested in a Guard IT bash plate ?, black. just come off my 990 adv, (traded her in). Excellent condition, Bomb proof (I know because ive had the bike and myself jacked into the air my a big rock slab the front wheel flicked up). All stainless fixings included.
£200 new from adventure spec, yours for £100 +postage or pick it up and i'll help you fit it. (15 min job to swap them).

you can see it in place here on my 990

Nevil, I'm interested to know; do you fill it up on the centre stand and brim both tanks or do the old right tank to a point then fill left hand tank on the side stand?

I always fill on the side stand, left tank first then the right, then top up the left again.

Filling on the centre stand usually ends up with a bit of fuel being spilt

That's interesting, left then right, I was always lead to believe that was a no-no, it has to be right then left? Makes more sense for it to be the way you do it, providing you don't put more in the right side and cause the left to overflow.

On a splash 'n dash, 10 quids worth in the right tank. Filling (brim), on the centre stand right then left. There is a chance of some leaking from the over flow if you park on the side stand afterwards, but I only do the complete fill-up before a longish jaunt, so spillages are minimal (if at all)

I'm sure that there's something about the correct procedure in the manual, but I can't believe that it can be too critical.

Correct procedure is ....

Bike on side stand
Brim right hand tank
Brim left hand tank
Close fuel caps.
No further topping up of other tanks

If you fill the left tank first, when you come to fill the right hand tank (which by nature is higher because of the side stand angle) it will start to add fuel to the already full left hand tank via the balance pipe.

This might not result in any immediate spillage at the pumps but as the cool fuel reaches ambient temperature it expands causing leakage 'on the run'

Ta for the offer but I've just moved into a new house and as a result, have NO bike budget (other than petrol!) for a while. Also, have no internet and bugger all mobile signal! Internet next week sometime apparently......

Thanks again

Chris is yer man for anything 950 related!

I'm about to start looking for a 950 (or a 990) once my GSA is sold. Great write up and good to hear how much you like the 990. Just back from the Dragon Rally where there were plenty of KTM's to admire.

I'd be interested to know how the Plastikote is holding up?

As I mentioned above I am looking at a 950 or 990 adventure, is there any difference in alternator output given I will be using a heated jacket and a sat nav. I am assuming that both will be up to the job...

and another thing - I read on the MNC review that both the 950 and the 990 have ABS - I understood that it was only the 990 that came with ABS. Can anyone confirm this as I quite like the idea of ABS and a 950.

Held up OK but looked a bit tatty after 6000 miles - I rubbed it down and have repainted using hammerite satin spray - lets see how this goes!

I've just sold this wee beauty for my chum.....fully serviced (valves done) with £££'s of titanium bolts/extras and the beautiful Akra full titanium/stainless/carbon system. The 950 engine is an absolute peach and I was sorely tempted to buy it myself. Personally, I much prefer the 950 to the 990 lump.....just gotta love those big carbs. :thumb

A year on, what are the OPs thoughts now?

I've just splashed out on an 05 model. Need to give it a good looking over and find out what service bulletins have been taken care of.

To update this thread at the 'year in' point...

In the last 12 months I've put just over 6k miles on the 950 and it's really impressed me. Most miles have been covered farting around locally (Kent) but I did a Ring trip in August as well.

What impresses me most is the way that the whole package seems to work. The LC8 is a peach in my view, powerful enough for me (easily!) with great linear dollops of torquey goodness allied to a chassis that continues to inspire confidence. No ABS, Servo, Efi clutter to go wrong, this is an old school bike and all the better for it. This bike is SERIOUS fun for local thrashes and I even did a little bit of green laning when the weather permitted. In Europe the bike proved to be a surprisingly good tourer; with a comfy riding position and a good enough (although not exceptional) range. On this note, I haven't toured two up on this bike (have old ST1300 for this) so can't comment on pros and cons here.

After my initial post purchase fettle,( wheel and steering bearings, carb balance etc( the bike has had basic servicing so far (2 oil changes, I switched to Castrol 1 Racing oil as it's essentially the same spec as the Motorex stuff but doesn't cost your first born and a kidney) I replaced the C&S, rear pads and both tyres during the last year. The only real issue was the fuel pump packing up, luckily 200m from my house! That cost 25 quid (pattern part from ebay) and an hour or so to fix. In December I took the centre stand off to fix a broken spring retainer (35 quiz from KTM or a fiver to a mate to weld (guess which way I went) As mentioned earlier, I've re touched the belly pan with rattle can satin black and have new pads to go in the front.

In precis, I'm really happy with this bike and have loved every minute (even the fettling!)

I'm in India right now and this morning my wife and I travelled on a train between Mysore and Bangalore, a journey of around 180kms. Over a paper cup of over-sweet chai, out of the blue, Nicky said 'Do you still miss your GS? you could sell the KTM and get another BMW'

I declined. That says it all really. Great bike.
