Hi All,
Bimbling along today noticed the abscence of the speedo but the plastic / chrome bezel stayed in place.
The lower section hanging off by the cables and knocking on the rear of the hedlamp housing.
It seems the unit just slots into the hole in mount from above with the bezel holding it in place, but the casing has sheared the complete circumference allowing it to drop through as this has caused the bezel to separate from the main body.

The dealers want me to travel significant distance so they can see it rather than rely on photos, but I suppose that's no different to any other warranty issue. A replacement speedo will be at zero miles, wondering if this can be set to the bike's current mileage despite dealers saying they would not do it and even said there would be no paperwork to show it had been changed and at what mileage on the basis that their system is computerised. When it goes back at the end of the PCP just concerned the finance company may get funny about it, they shouldn't as the replacement would be done within the Norton network under warranty, but been here before with a car and it was problematic. Tempted to stick it back together with adhesives as it's going back, guess that's good enough as you would not know looking at it, but if I kept it I would want it 100%.

Has anyone else had this issue on their 961 by any chance ?

With many vehicles today, the mileage, max speed, revs & running times are stored within the ECU, so would not rely on the speedo head. I've no idea what system Norton have adopted though, given it's a retro classic, but it may be worth talking to the factory.

Thanks, had not thought mileage could be stored in ECU, obvious really doh ! Dealer probably won't know so will talk to factory if some tech person will respond of course.

Told them to recover mine.

Bike came back with zero miles.

Did 6 miles then told them to come pick it back up as head bearings mega loose.

Yep, exactly the same, wonder if it is just the speedo or if the other clock is a potential problem.
Think I will have it in bits to see if there is a split in the casing.
May I ask a few questions Rich as may help me decide what to do ?
Did the dealer recover or was it the Norton recovery service, is it two years from new I forget ?
Did they deliver it back to you as part of the Norton recovery service ?
How long did it take to get the new speedo and was it just the inner or the whole unit ?
Was there any documentation to show the swap and mileage at which it was done ?

Cheers
Andy

Christ, I hope nothing important falls off…

Good luck with that. I’ve called the factory but only ever been contacted back by a dealer.

How was it recovered? By th factory or a dealer, or by your own breakdown?

Through the RAC recovery. Need to moan at them though and be insistent.

Mine has been gone since the 30th of September, with no contact from the dealer.

Not that bothered really though. Sick of it now.

I remember seeing this photo and being shocked by the finish of the aluminium.

On the yokes and speedo ring?

It's a matt / rough finish.

It's works, I like the look of it. I think it looks trick. Bastard to keep clean though. Fingerprints etc.

Furniture polish sprayed on neat then wiped off with a clean cloth seems to work.

No no , on the actual speedo casing where the needle is just above where it says Norton. It looks like its been hacksawed. On the contrary I really like the finish on the older and newer 961’s mainly cos they still had the proper logo , not the new one

Thanks- is that the breakdown cover that Norton provided or your own? I don’t even recall what breakdown cover was given.

Mines off the road too- needs a new TPS, keeps cutting out. The Silverstone Norton garage are trying to get one

Norton recovery is with the RAC.

Yes the RAC. Useless bar stewards.

Told them it needed recovery. So they sent a patrol.

"Oh I can't take this, needs recovery!"

Yeah no shit Sherlock.

Round and round in circles until a flatbed shows up.

"Oh it's a bike, I don't normally take bikes."

Yeah it's a bike numb nuts. Unless you know any Norton cars? FFS!

Argh.

I don't know mate.

I only rode it for 5 miles, then realised the headstock was loose. Rode home and rang them to come pick it back up.

They called today from the dealer. It comes back Wednesday on their trailer. They have adjusted the head bearings again and fitted a new headlight because it was marked from the speedo.
