Hi All,
I’ve recently brought a 1997 R1100GS with 88,000 miles on the clock. I was told there was a noise coming from the clutch area when the bike was in neutral and the clutch out.

The noise goes away when the clutch is pulled in. It didn’t sound too bad when I first heard it and I hoped I might get a seasons riding out of it, and look into it over the winter.

Anyway I noticed yesterday after a long run that the noise was much louder and from looking at some of the articles on the web I’m thinking input shaft bearings?

There are no problems with the function of the gearbox and all the gears go in and stay in as they should. I should also mention that the previous owner who only had the bike a short while told me that the clutch had been replaced shortly before he got it and that the one that came out was hardly any different from the new one which went in and I have the old one which looks ok.

The sound is a metallic knocking noise about three or four knocks per second.

I am casting my mind back a bit here, but the bike does not seem as smooth at motorway speeds as I remember my R100/7 used to be. I don’t know if that’s related in any way or if it’s more likely to be due to the tyres (Tourance) or the need for a good service.

I would appreciate any suggestions to the best course of action, if that action should be immediate, and what sort of costs I am looking at if I try to do the work myself.

Thanks for taking the time read this. I look forward to any advice offered.

All the Best
