Just returned from a weekend camping on Hayling Island, and looking for some advice. First of all however met a new Gs'er Andy who takes delivery next week.
Nice planned ride out for the Saturday, and just set off when my bike ( Oct 1200 Gs with 400 miles on the clock ) backfired big time, and cut out. Coasted to a stop and after a quick inspection noticed that the large inlet pipe to the L cylinder had blown itself loose. Wonderfull response from BMW emergency service as within the hour a dedicated BMW response vehicle arrived with a trained bike technician who commented that this was a fairly common occurrence. He sorted out the jubilee type clip and reattached the inlet pipe and after starting she ran fine. He suggested that one of the sensors may have temporarily lost itys seating and provided the wrong info, causing the backfire, and ending with the inlet pipe being blown out of its seating.
Has anyone else out there come across a similar problem, if so i would be grateful for your views, or should I contact my dealer in any case. As happened, I was able to join the rideout for lunch and then continue without any noticeable problems.
Most impressed with the response from BMW emergency services, and I promised a mention for the 2 young men, but I've forgotten their names. Thanks both.

Sorry!!! So pleased to get the title correct I forgot the rest of the post.

Hmmm......first time I've read something like that about a 12 as far as I can remember:confused:

Sounds reasonable though.

Similar experience

...Not on my GS, or any other BMW, but on my 1979 Yamaha XS650. It used to do this regularly, blowing out the left inlet tube from the stub. Would run roughly after this had happened, but then running roughly was its speciality.

Ended up carrying a stubby screwdriver in my pocket so I could park up and fix it in a metter of seconds. Someties with the engine still running.

Robin.

I wouldn't mind if BMW had used jubilee clips, trouble is they have used ligarex strapping like the stuff used to fix driveshaft gaiters on cars which requires special tools to fit, so its not exactly easy to do a roadside repair when touring etc. I just hope mine never does it, thanks for the warning.

Now If you guys had any time & miles under your wheels you would know that all airheads could suffer from this "sneeze" which blows off the inlet connector, and is easily fixed with a screwdriver & a little attention. Showing & feeling my age.

Thanks Dirty Dan for reassuring me that the ' They all tend to do that ' told me by the service man wasn't made up. Spoke to the service dept at my dealer this morning and he wasn't too perturbed, however he did say it was the first 1200 he had heard of with this problem. Suggested that as all seemed ok just carry on and and mention it at the 6000 mile service.

I read about a similar case over in Holland last week.

Same symptoms, same fix, same explanation.

I could show you the thread on the Dutch forum, but I suppose that wouldn't be much use :)

Cheers,
Michel

Yep, that was me :D . It was the R-cylinder. Dealer gave me more or less the same story. Did not really satisfy me, left me a bit worried (like you I suppose). So went today to another dealer. He confirmed what the first had said. The management system probably didn't even record it (according to him) but that we'll find out for sure at the 20k service.

But unlike your guy. I was the first they came across with this issue.
