Aye, up for that, nice idea :thumb
Before any decision on brand how about a wee collective taster of the options sometime? :beerjug:
Clachaig Inn has a good selection, could meet there for a wee taster sometime (and rooms, bunkhouse nearby, campsite etc etc)

Sounds like a plan :beerjug:

One of the distilleries (Tullibardine?) fill the casks in June and December. I'd imagine that that might well be the case with others.

Better have a tasting well before june then :thumb2

Yes, yesyesyesyesyeysyeys....yes...please. Count me in.:thumb2

(EDIT) is there any warehousing charges to be added to the initial purchase?

(EDIT2) Wot about bottling charges? Anyway, it's still a bloody good idea. I'm coming up with a figure of about a tenner a bottle (inc customs) without bottling annd warehousing - if applicable.

As far as I can gather per the websites I've looked at, you don't pay "storage" until the 10 years distillation are up, then if you want the whisky to mature further, you pay any fee. Insurance is also taken care of by the distillery for the 10 years maturation.

Not sure about bottling/labelling charges...I'll find out tomorrow.

Hey guys, a nice idea but......
..
....a 250 litre hogshead will contain around 160 Litres of pure alcohol for £1600. That's £10 per litre of alcohol and you tie up your money for 10 years before its matured to a reasonable level. You may need to add the cost of insurance and storage to that as well. Do not consider this to be in any way a sound investment buying at the prices originally mentioned. You'll get good whisky to enjoy at something like trade prices but that is about it.

The yield from that cask after 10 years will be around 120 litres of pure alcohol with the angels having swallied the balance during maturation. The strength at that point will be in the high 50's% so at cask strength will yield ~ 300 x 70cl bottles (based on 58%). These are all estimates as every cask is different but as it is what I do for a living believe me when I say that they are pretty reliable ones. The distilleries quote bottle yields at normal mass market strengths of 43%, chill filtered:(

Current trade prices for matured spirit are between £1 and £2.50 per litre of pure alcohol x the number of years its been matured. So a good malt, maybe not the most sought after Islays or Macallan, at £2 per litre of alcohol you could buy a 5 year old cask for the price you're talking about and only need to mature it for another 5 years.

Alternatively form a bigger syndicate and buy casks ready to bottle. I can supply lists with hundreds of casks ffrom most distilleries aged between 0 (new fills) and 30+ years old. We also have bottling losses that are among the lowest in in the industry.

Regards Packer, (specialist single cask whisky bottler and packer)

P.S. I'm off to Stockholm this month to talk to a couple of thousand whisky mad Swedes/Noresemen/Fins about this very subject. Which reminds me, I better learn a bit about it:)

PPS

SS Spirit.

God bless her and all that sail in her.:D

And don't forget that when you take it out of bond you also have to pay the excise duty, currently £22.64 per litre of pure alcohol = £2716.80 plus VAT on that which brings it up to £3192.24. Of course no matter how you buy your cask that will need paying.

According to the Tullibardine website, Duty and VAT at today's prices are £85 per 12 bottles (70cl). How does that compare with your info? :nenau

It's on their link if you don't believe me...

It's not a case of believing you Ronno believe me:D

Excise Duty Rates http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/budget2009/bn86.pdf

12 x 0.7ltrs x 43% = 3.612 L/Alc x £22.64 = £81.76 x 1.175 (17.5% VAT) = £96.09 but

12 x 0.7ltrs x 40% = 3.36 L/Alc x £22.64 = £76.07 x 1.175 (17.5% VAT) = £89.38

Their website must be out of date.

300 70cl bottles between 12 of us still sounds OK to me for my "investment" of under £150.

However, thanks for your concern. TBH it's more of a bit of fun than an investment so I perhaps should have chosen my thread title more carefully.

I'm surprised at you mentioning insurance and storage when I've already covered both aspects earlier in the thread.

I for one would certainly be interested in hearing more about the lists of casks from various distilleries per your post above. I'm sure my "fellow investors" will be too. The more choice the better...

I only read the first post:blast

PM me an e-mail address and I'll mail you lists tomorrow. In my own stock stock I have Laphroaig, Arran, Tamdhu, Macallan, Aultmore, Speyside (Distlillery not region), Tobermory, Tullibardine.

I also have broker lists and lists of surplus casks from trade customers. I'll leave the prices on these lists as I'm not looking to profit from this. You can deal directly with the broker if you prefer although I'd need to ask permission of the customers prior to putting you in touch with them.

You could always have a bigger syndicate, put less money in per person but do casks on a regular basis.

If you get 300 bottles at cask strength, i.e. 25 dozen then using your original figures 25 of you could each put in £64 and get a case each. (Plus all the tax, bottling etc. already mentioned.)

That way you could have variety in your dramming society:)

The all new UKGreatSpiriters society:mmmm
