Right, apart from the reluctance to go round tight corners, I'm loving the Fatboy but finding the sound of the standard pipes a little too quiet.

So, what would you suggest to enhance the vocals?

Is the bike so much better with a full Stage 1 or should I simply look at mufflers?

I don't want to wake the dead but would like the tin cans on my daily commute to hear me coming and allow me to filter through a bit more...

Rather than make it twice as loud with two new snorty silencers, just replace one with a snorty silencer so it's only 1 times louder.
Simple.

Fayboys used to have a blanking washer in the exhaust making them sound like a Vdub beetle, it was a simple job to remove the silencers and using a long screwdriver and big hammer, knock the washer out, this was pretty much a standard bodge straight from the dealers. This was on a carbed one so perhaps the injected ones may be different. Basically the originals you can't see through the centre if held unto the light but the modded ones have a clear path.

Stage 1.... you know it makes sense......

Not long till you get your HD then Bez???...

What actual difference will Stage 1 make?

What actual difference will Stage 1 make?

I put standard HD touring mufflers (like the ones in the pic: 65538-95) on my 96 bike recently and it seems to be smoother with good, if not better, power delivery right through the range. I think a bit of back pressure in the exhaust system is a good thing unless you're riding balls out all the time. I did have these on originally and I f****d them up by 'spiking' them i.e. punched a hole through the centre baffle. They worked alright but sounded horrible - a sort of raspy quality to the sound. I'd done the same trick to HD pipes on other models and it worked well.

In the last 18 yrs I've had about 5 different types of pipes on it and I'm happiest with the ones I've got now.

My bike has a non-standard carb/filter, cam and ignition set-up so that all helps - probably a bit more than what they call Stage 1. Very happy with the way it goes now.

It's not completely straightforward to change the exhaust on the later bikes as you have to deal with the load of junk they have to put on to meet emission controls but there's plenty of advice around on how to do that.

Having 'staged' both my Harleys (carbed and EFi), I would make the following points:

1. You will see an improvement in power output (mostly peak) after making a stage 1 upgrade.
2. The bike will run a little richer and cooler and better. Modern Harley's are setup to run lean (and very hot).
3. If you only change the silencers, then you won't need to change anything else on the bike.
4. If you swap out the whole exhaust, then you will need to do a proper stage 1 (air filter, fuelling and pipes). This is more expensive.
5. You can pick up parts used on ebay over time, this will save you money.
6. If you want to change all components, it won't matter too much what bits you choose, there are very rarely any major compatibility issues.
7. Air Filter - it's all about increasing the flow, the housing is just 'bling'. (I went for a hi-flow K&N that fit under my stock housing, relatively 'cheap').
8. Fuelling - XIED or a V&H fuel pak is simple, but crude. Personally, I would buy a something like a Power Commander as most dyno places can set them up for you without too much hassle.
9. Pipes - Personally I like 2:1 systems, but it's totally your call. V&H Short Shots are very common, I'd say too common, but it's a personal taste thing.
10. Budget - it can be anything from a few hundred to around £1500.
11. Stage 2 - just to confuse the issue, you will see the most benefit from fitting news cams to a stage 1 bike. The cost is not too much more (few hundred) and the increase in performance will be massive. You won't regret it.

Hope this helps.

Tick, tock, tick , tock.

I have thought about it long and hard, but at the moment I can't justify it to myself.
In my world everything has to be justified in my head, some things take a little longer than others but justified they must be.
Like for instance, my wife wanted to go to Australia on a three week holiday this year, we have been to many different parts of Australia
every year for the last five years.
This year I have said no!

Sorry for hijacking your thread Davel.:D

We like off topic in here...Davel .. Find your local independent.... Don't use the dealer... You will save ££ on a stage one..

Won't it fuck with the warranty?

Only three months old.
