Hi Guys,

I have a few days holiday booked in late August and wanted to take a scenic trip (NO motorways) from Le Havre, perhaps down the coast and returning on a different route.

We leave on the 24th and return on 31st which gives us 6 days to travel. I would appreciate info on stop off's, routes and hotels too.

I look forward to a load of replies from you well travelled chaps :bounce1

Cheers,
Noel

Have a search in the Battlefield section on here, plenty of history to see in the parts of France you're planning to ride.
Also, this is a handy website, the French outdoor types use it, so quality of hotels and prices are very good.

Normandy and Brittany coasts will be OK be full of Brits towing caravans in August. Don't bother going South of the Loire by coast - it's pretty dull.
You could come back via the Loire to Blois and then it is a quick trip North back to Le Havre.

If you want to just bimble through classic farming land then Normandy is nice (best May when you get the apple blossom). The Golf du Morbian (?spelling) - bottom left of Brittany- is interesting (fab sunsets) and of course the assiette fruits de mer royale is worth the trip alone.

For biking roads I'd favour the Belgium Ardennes and Les Vosgues (sailing via Calais). 6 days could have you riding the Route des Cretes around Gerardmer or even around the Massive Central

Noel,

Which coast are you aiming for? The Mediterranean or the Channel (Le Havre is on it, so you'll not go far ) or the Atlantic?

I guess you mean the Atlantic? If so, whereabouts might you like to get to? Give us a slight clue.

You have six days. Do those six include the maybe half to a full day it might take you to go from your front door in Hampshire to Le Havre and make the reurn crossing back?

In short: How long do you have between landing at Le Havre and your needing to come back to the same port to catch your ferry back across the water?

You want to see 'stuff' and NO motorways (Great roads, mate). Well, that's easy. Get a map and avoid going down anything that even vaguely resembles a motorway.

Seriously, there are several threads and trip reprts not a million miles away from this one that tells you exactly what YOU need to do to plan a route and / or an entire holiday. Why not have a go at it? It will make a change from just sitting there like a pudding, hoping that someone will do it all for you.

You don't go until August, which is months away.... it's snowing (or feckin' cold) outside, so you won't be going anywhere on your new 1200 for a day or two. Use the time to make a start.
