I've some corrosion on the frame...sive or six small spots need to be treated. Am I right in saying, all I need to do is strip back the bad and apply a rust killing primer and then hammerite smooth black?

I'm wondering about the brown coloured rust though. How can I get rid of that?

I use a converting primer, like curust (I think thats what its called) Its a milky liquid that you paint onto the rust, it contains phosphoric acid and will turn black as it dries, this will protect the steel and is best left for a while to weather before overcoating with shiny black of your choice.

Satin black hammerite is the best match i have found for such things

would that be satin black smoothrite and not hammerite? it would be nice to know what's a match, there again how much is touch up paint for the bike?

It's called krust. And the paint match kit it A GREAT idea. Thanks. I'll clean it up tomorrow and put that krust stuff on. I'll 'borrow' some from the old mans shed:augie Save me buying the little bit I need. Thanks.

Might go for the hammerite yet. seems a lot cheaper. Seeing as I can paint the whole engine block as well as a few areas with rust for less than the paint kit!

Smoothrite does as it says on the can, finish is smooth.

Hammerite, is a rough finish, we use this at work, great for hiding imperfections in the metal, would look shite on a bike though.

Cheers Eliminator. I'm going up to buy all the bit's and pieces now. I'll try and post a few pix on the results.

One final question, all the areas in question are covered in acf50. Will a bit of wet and dry get it clean enough?

Off to the shops with me:thumb

If it's covered in ACF50, wipe it off with white spirit, or the thinners that you're going to buy, so that you can clean your brushes with after using the smoothrite.:D

Be wary of the thinners, I'd suggest you try wiping a place you can't see first, in case it takes some paint off:eek: It shouldn't do, but I wouldn't want to be responsible if it did.

To degrease before painting go to a car paint shop and buy a can of 'Panel wipe' (naptha) - unsurprisingly its safe for use on painted surfaces and is cheap (~ £10 for a five litre can). I use it for all sorts of degreasing jobs on the bike.

starting to wonder if we sell smoothrite here. I got hammerite Smooth black. Is that the same thing?

excellent. I put on the krust stuff earlier. Wow. It looks much better already. Even before the touch of paint.

I didn't buy any white spirit from the shop...Just wondering if some carb cleaner would do the same job?:nenau
