Go for the Adventure - I test rode both before placing my order.
The Adventure handles just as well on road and should be more capable off road. You have more options for gearing the seat IS more comfortable and it has 2 cigarette lighters!!

Hi guys thanks for the help and info, I have ridden a standard GS and I think I will go out and try them back to back to see which I prefer, some of the nearly new prices are bloody high SLM have an ADV in stock 3k ish they want £10k which in my eyes seems high)

I have done a lot of research and the prices differ greatly from dealer to dealer, OK some are slightly better spec'd but not by much.

I have seen the Pics of the new 1200 GS coming out that looks good, decisions decisions

I know what I am like, if I go and ride it & like it, I'll buy it.

Just a little nervous about selling the mille and getting the GS then thinking this is slow and boring, tell me I am doing the right thing.

Adventure v Standard

Right, this is war........

Get the standard.

Much better looking. And less pretentious.
No need for all that extra weight of a large fuel tank.
If you ride a bike this big and heavy off road or even start to drop it at low speed it's better if you can reach the floor.
Remove the rear seat on the standard for much increased and lower luggage.
I personally love 1st gear the way it is, just keep two fingers over the clutch on tight, up hill hairpins.
Spend the extra on decent (H+B) crash bars and choose your luggage, junk the screen for an MRA.......................................

Just don't get one in Pissy Yellow

Oh and the standard is faster.

You forgot ................ better seat,adjustable screen,lower to ground and the fact that more standard 1150GS's are sold,over Adventurers by a figure of 2.5-3:1,the whole world over.
That speaks volumes.
Save your cash to spend on accessories........

Go for the Adventure, i have had the standard Gs, and am now the proud owner of a Silver Adventure, the only thing better than the ADV is the colour ( period ) the adventure corners tighter, and is faster than the standard GS due to the low first gear you get with the overland package, this as been confirmed to me by others in the Gs club and also by other guys not associated with this club, the seat is also better, having owned both the high and low seat for the Adventure, i went with the high version.....there seems to be a lot of guys who change the make of seats on the standard Gs IE sergent, corbin wunderlich and tourateck, are just a few, if the seats were much better, i ask why change,

The choice between a Adventure and a Standard Gs is purely a personal thing, and one thing that will be discussed many times more on this board, but i believe go with what srikes you as the right chice for you, and not what someone else professis to be set in stone.

Here there is one Graphitan GS and one Silver Adv and they won't take anymore orders for this year...

Both have ABS and thats it for options, dealer fitted is an arm and a leg...

Correction: There is just the Graphitan,, I bought the Adv

What do you think of these 2

I have been talking to a dealer about a GS and an ADV and they have 2, this is the deal what do you think.

The R1150GS is Blue and White, has heated grips, ABS, white indicator lenses, hand guards and L & R pannier rails at £9248.00 (includes £200 premium for paint job)

The Adventure ( you need to be around 6 foot tall really) is in white aluminium with black engine, white lenses, large fuel tank, ABS, engine protection bars and again the absolutely essential BMW heated grips. All this for £9,883.00.

Both prices are on the road prices and include 24 months BMW warranty.

I thought about getting the Adv over the Standard GS but in the end decided that the standard seat was better for a pillion, and the seat height would have been a problem too even with the lower seat fitted. Saying that I'm sure that the suspension sags a fair bit after a couple of hundred miles as my GS is no way as tall as when I first picked it up from the dealer, so it maybe worth sitting on a used ADV if they have one.

I also had the same problem regarding the decision whether to keep my Mille or not, and to be honest I'm glad I didn't as it would never have been used, although I am looking to buy a 600 track bike in the next few months.

One last thing, I have had the GS since March and have covered just over 11K miles, initially I missed the top end power of the Mille, but this only lasted for the first few miles. I took it on the Alps tour with Tobers and continued to Corsica, I have also just returned from 2 weeks in Tuscany and Umbria, and not once did I feel that any other bike would have been more fun in fact I was glad that I was not riding a Mille.

I just need to get my bike in the paper and sell it, my Alpine Stars Ben Bostrom leathers are going to look a bit strange on a GS I think

That looks like a Blackbird on your avatar. Was it a previous bike? If so, don't you miss that bottomlees pit of power and torque? (how much power do you want? Go on, have some more. Even more? Just keep twisting that wrist - take as much as you'd like, there's an endless supply).

That ability to reel in your mates after you've slowed down a bit to admire the scenery and they've got ahead. Just a slight tweak of the wrist, and they who were mere dots on the horizon are RIGHT HERE in a couple of seconds. If you had a Blackbird and now don't, you not not miss that?

Yes my last bike was a Blackbird and it was great for all the reasons you mention, but I did not fancy spending my removed ex-free time with murderers and rapists not to mention the prison officers. Once did the reeling in of my mates as you said on the A9 saw the 1 and 8 and 0 felt the rush and nearly crapped myself when the camera flashes went off not a nice experience at that speed, fortunatly heard nothing further, phew. It was as good a bike as the GS but different and as the best bike on the planet is the one you currently have the GS gets the vote (at the moment)

Standard or ADv

I was presented with the same problem last year, off a sports bike and onto a GS, the Adventurer had just come out so I tried one.......the decition was easy for me as I just found the ADv too tall. But I did take into consideration the fuel consumption the short 1st & 6th gear might be great for commuting or off road but blasting down through France I find the tall 6th gear on the Standard a real boon.
As mentioned by others you must try both. Might be worth waiting to see if the "NEW" model really will be a 1200 with 100bhp!!!! Order now and wait to see!

A GS or an Adventure

Go for an Adventure, just traded my 97 1100Gs for a new black Adventure, no comparison no looking back.
The difference in power is very noticeable, the 5th and (proper )6th gear roll on acceleration on the Adventure is tremendous chews the pants of my mates 2002 1150GS.
The big tank looks class dont really notice a difference in the handling with a full tank of fuel plus the extra mileage out of the tank is a big bonus. The two colour seat gets the thumbs up from me and at the minute seems even more comfy than the ordinary set up it is slightly higher than the highest setting on the standard 1150GS although I am 6'3".
The novelty value is still there at the minute, its nice to have something different from the norm. I have had it 2 1/2 weeks and have 1200 miles on it already speaks for itself really. But at the end of the day the choice is yours if you can afford that little extra price tag. Adventure or not to Adventure I know I made the right call.
