A GS'ers journey through Morocco

The reason for the change of destination for the night was that Aoulouz was the start of our next long piste. It runs up past the dam and north east close by Djebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest mountain, through several small villages and joins the main road at Agouim which is south of the Tiz-n-Tichka.

There's only one place to stay in Aoulouz, the not so grand Hotel Sahara. We ate with the locals on the pavement and watched European football with them on TV.

The first part is tarmac to the reservoir.

Then a graded piste which deteriorates after every village.
This is quite long route so take a rest in the shade when we can, actually I think Rick had to go for a walk in the bushes but I doubt you're interested.

Checking the piste on topographic software beforehand I could see that for the most part it ran through a long valley.
150761356-L.jpg

And long it was, with never ending stoney hairpins, sometimes the piste turned rocky with steep climbs and other times it was nice sweeping track.
that's Djebel Toubkal in the background, we are riding towards it and are to bare right shortly before it.

Sometimes that nice sweeping piste is not quite ready.
150771694-L.jpg

The piste seems to go on and on and it's all quite hard work but very rewarding.

Perfect GS country:thumb

Eventually we come to the village of Sour which a cafe, so coffee, coke and a scrawny omelette were ordered while a mule checked out this new fangled 1200 thingy.
150764728-L.jpg

A few miles later the piste spits us out onto the main road at Agouim, we ride the tarmac south untill a piste which acts as a short cut takes us straight into Ait-Benhaddou.
We check into the very posh hotel and I climb up to see the place properly, on my several previous visits it always been too hot so took advantage of the cool before dinner and beer.
150752980-L.jpg

Many will have seen pictures of Ait-Benhaddou before but it's much better from the top:thumb
150752109-L.jpg

150760290-L.jpg

Our next distination is Marrakech via the magnificent piste through Telouet.
150773694-L.jpg

:)
150769149-L.jpg

And then the infamous climb up:eek: . I go ahead to the first hairpin to take some photos. The track is in poor condition lower down and I'm very surprised to find I haven't buckled a wheel, had a puncture or fallen off. Once again, a loaded GS was on it's limits..well it was on mine anyway.
150769748-L.jpg

Here Rick is past the worst, and heading for the hairpin.
150762341-L.jpg

Keep concentrating mate:thumb
150757123-L.jpg

You can just see the tight hairpin with big drop just behind him:)
150775665-L.jpg

Nice one:clap
150776081-L.jpg

IanB the cockey git:bow almost rides the berm around it:clap :clap
150758865-L.jpg

And is away up the mountain.
150767307-L.jpg

Perhaps this is where the only gay in the village lives...surely Ian is not waypointing it:D
Check out the boulder above the houses:eek:
150768914-L.jpg

Nearing the end of the piste and there's plenty of tourist 4x4s, some trying not to let us past others heading straight at us:rolleyes:
150769368-L.jpg

Both Rick and I have caught our panniers on the rock faces which get the 'boot treatment' and Adrian gets a cracked front cover
150756327-L.jpg

which later gets successfully gaffer taped despite the offers of epoxy repairs etc.:thumb
150756809-L.jpg

We ride over the Tiz-n-Tichka and it feels like we're almost home as we roll into Marrakech with perhaps only miles ahead of us.

It's all been said about Marrakech before and they say a picture speaks a thousand words, I guess being stalked by the shadows of four smelly GS'ers sums it up.

Tim, I'm impressed you guys did the piste to Marakech with luggage. I left mine in the hotel and still thought it was a potential bike breaker.

Great pics.

Great pics.

I lost the compression damping in my rear Ohlins shock early on in the trip so my bike was a bit of a pig throughout, but by the time we got there I thought if the bike was going to break it would have already done so.

Well there's still a bit to come but it involves fat dancing girls, Fes and more..

Ian thinks he is being offered money for the pleasure but then he's young and relatively innocent:thedummy :thedummy :D

Rick on the other hand:rob

More later if you can bare it:thumb

Tim, before I was unhappy that I had to leave early.:(
Now I am downright pi**ed off
That looks awesome, and the photo through the hole in the wall is inspired :bow

We left Fes and headed north to Ketama:spl1f: <, ive ridden this road before and said I wouldn't again because of the feeling of lawlesness but the lads hadn't seen that part of the Riff except around Zoumi on the way down.

As it turned out I really injoyed the ride, yes we were approached several times when stopped but it felt as though it was all in good humour as we joked with the hash sellers.

150771638-L.jpg

Lovely scenery on a good day and great twisty tarmac.
Looking north.
150762140-L.jpg

We arrived in Ceuta just in time for the ferry and suitable accomodation was found for me:mad:
150760462-L.jpg

I had mixed feelings as we left the Afican continent and looked over the stern, we had seen much and been far with as little tarmac as possible for this Moroccan trip. We'd had no breakdowns, no epic flood water crossings, no injuries and no arguments or fall outs but still had a great adventure... was I losing my touch?:nenau :D
So I wondered, were we lucky and got away with it or is that how it's supposed to be:thumb
150760945-L.jpg

.... and it didn't seem long before we were in Tarifa eating paella, swordfish and tuna steaks.

By now we were longing for a straight piece of tarmac to get us to the Picos de Europa but didn't fancy the motorway grind again. After Cadiz we headed up the Ruta de la Plata which when finished could be the best way to cross Spain.

I like to save a day or so which can be used in Morocco for emergencies on my trips, we hadn't needed it so what better place to make use of it than the fabulous Picos.
150770895-L.jpg

We tried a longish piste in the mountains that Ian and I both know well but the main route was blocked with snow still.
150755439-L.jpg

We tried the higher track but that too was impassable.
150772245-L.jpg

What a contrast from a few days earlier.
150772553-L.jpg

We tried the lower track through a wet meadow:blast
150766888-L.jpg

But found we couldn't climb out of it with worn TKCs.
150771329-L.jpg

Another fantastic place to ride.
150768614-L.jpg

:)
150754489-L.jpg

So retrace our steps to the valley at Espinama.
150768784-L.jpg

We are tired now and do the tourist thing up the Fuente De cable car and stand on the mesh platform with a huge drop beneath our feet.
150756659-L.jpg

150755135-L.jpg

Ian and I take a walk into the mountains:augie
150773514-L.jpg

And Ian views the valley we had been trying to ride through earlier in the day.
150759100-L.jpg

So ended a great trip.
Thank you gents it was a real pleasure to ride and share your company:clap :bow

BTW this may look like my beard is old and grey, but I like to think it's really the ice:hide
