Hi, I will start this thread by letting you know that I am a completely useless with trying to download stuff from websites, zip files etc. I am not lazy just unable to remember the way to do things on a computer, a couple of forums and eBay and that is about my lot, never even looked at Facebook, twitter and all that.

Anyway, two years ago I travelled solo across Chile, the Andes, Argentina and back over the Atacama Desert up to Peru without a Sat Nav just using a petrol station map and a wristwatch with hands on it to navigate, which I find much easier than using technology. I also travelled from Scotland to Morocco and back using a paper towel with capital cities written on it instead of a map. I'm definitely more of a dinosaur than idiot.

Next year I am heading to China with MotoExplorers and was advised to buy a Garmin Sat Nav as it can load different maps. Last week I bought a BMW Nav V and fitted it to my bike so as to get used to it before August when I leave.

My question is........ Can I buy little SD cards with the other countries on it and just put them in the back when I get to the border?

I'm going from Scotland up to Nordkapp in Norway before heading south through Finland meeting up with the other travellers just before the Russian border, through Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,China,Laos and finishing in Bangkok.

If these maps are available to buy for the countries not on my Nav V could someone let me know. If they are not readily available, if there is someone on here who could make them I would be happy to pay.

Apologies for my lack of knowledge on such matters, it is a constant frustration of mine as otherwise I am quite an intelligent person.

Thanks for reading this without falling asleep.

Ahem....if you're stuck Jimmy, pop up to see me here in Ladybank at some point and we'll see what we can sort out for you. :thumb2

Jimmy - you do yourself a disservice. If you can manage to do adventure touring, as you do, and organise that then, you can master the simple skills needed to operate IT.

Get onto Youtube and search - there are thousands of short videos which will show you how to do everything. If you're unable to remember how to do things then why not make yourself a crib sheet?

Visit Garmin Express to see what maps are available (the BMW Nav 5 is a Garmin)

Thanks for the replies guys, Schtum Id'd like to take you up on your offer, Thank You.

Thanks for the link Wapping, I'll take a wee look.

MW, your crib sheet comment made me laugh, I've noticed that i have been having memory problems linked to stress, losing keys, forgetting where I had left my trailer or making sure building materials were on site for the guys that work for me. My wife suggested I keep a detailed diary to help me out so we spent a whole Sunday night writing all my appointments down for the coming week.

I lost the diary before lunch on the Monday. lol Never ever found it.

Cheers all JimmyMac

Problem solved, providing that is that the OP remembers about the thread, the advice it contains and Schtum's kind offer.

Thread closed.
