Any excuse to take the bike for a ride!

This ride was a challenge, to see if I could keep up with a train

I am not a trainspotter, but the engineering machine that I went to see today needs a mention
First clue, it is steam related and this is NOT the engine:

Second clue, it is north Exmoor:

A nice ford:

On the other side of the ford, , whilst having lunch, we noticed these ponies with hoods on their heads:

At first we thought that it was cruel, but on closer looking, the ponies can actually see through the material and it is a kind way of keeping flies away from their eyes.
Now back on topic..
Parked the bike at Minehead station:

Watched a train being steamed up:

Here is what we were waiting for:

Can you guess what it is yet?
For any steam enthusiasts, this is a Peppercorn Class A1 Steam Locomotive named Tornado
What is remarkable is that Tornado is the first steam locomotive, to be built in Britain for almost 50 years at a cost of £3M
The A1’s were designed by Arthur Pepercorn, the last LNER Chief Mechanical Engineer and were to be the most reliable locomotives of that time, using roller bearings. Furthermore they were able to use lesser quality coal.
Most of the engine was built in Darlington, but the boiler was built in Meiningen, East Germany, which still has equipment to build a boiler of this size:

We followed its route as far as we could. Here we waited at Blue Anchor:

Tornado approaches Blue Anchor with Dunster in the background
The steam flushes a raptor:

Entering Watchett:

We rode as far as Stogumber and then lost the Tornado :(

Two more stops and we would have made Bishops Lydeard

Tornado is at the West Somerset Railway until 15th June 2009
:D

thanks for posting - i'll let my old man know - he's in milverton and likes a good steam train :thumb

Great pictures, where was the picture of the ford taken?

I'm from Taunton, great stretch of road to explore (Taunton - Blue Anchor - Minehead etc), where in the area are you from?

The ford is at Dunster, round the back of the castle. The public road ends for motor vehicles at the ford and the other side is private and pedestrian only... and marked so.
We loved the ride from Crowcombe and will explore the Quantocks again sometime, because it is new territory. Are there any good offroad tracks around there that you know of ?
I am from Brizzle :D

Well further south-east to Crowcombe is a quarry, with a rather step battered road leading to the top of the hill, always fun to slap a bike up there.

However as far as off-road tracks, I cannot seem to find a public off-road track, I have been thrown off of some forest tracks because they are private property :(

If I find any I will be sure to share :P

That is a thing of rare beauty. Bit like an Adv!

Thanks for showing it:thumb2

Thanks for posting that, I am going to look at the timetable and see if I can catch sight of it on my cycle home today. May be some good training playing race the train on my fixie!!!
The WSR have kept it quiet, havent seen any publicity locally:nenau
I'll probably find that roads are choca with steam enthusiasts!

It was in the Gazette

BBC did a couple of documentaries on the project, they were on BBC4 earlier this year.

They might still be on the iPlayer.

You have probably all seen the Top Grear Tornado race, a couple of weeks ago on the telly and has been discussed on other recent threads on this site, but in case you haven't:

Tornado is running as 'The Torbay Express' on Sunday 5th July 2009 as follows:

Bristol Temple Meads 0915 rtrn 2139
WSM 0939 2108
Taunton 1042 2015
Exeter St Davids 1118 1841
Paignton 1213 1757
Kingswear 1255 1715

I am not 100% sure that Tornado is pulling the return, but am reasonably sure that it is

Enjoy oh trainspotters ye :D
