A new initiative - France, long weekend breaks

:jes

I used the popular expression on these pages, simply for amusement.

Dinner, for some, is strictly at dinner time, just as it was when they were at school at around 12:30 to 13:00. What others (including myself) know as ‘lunch’.
The lunch bell would never have sounded right at my school;; :D

as an example of what could maybe work.....

I´ll take it from the France side, how anyone wants to get to the Chunnel is their issue:

Overnight stay Friday. I just took one of those that I know but there are loads and in the ´´within 30 miles of the Chunnel´´ thread there were some good tips
Calais to Montreuil is 65km on the motorway

Friday evening
Hotel - In the town of Montreuil sur Mer. Great hotel with amazing restaurant but for those that arrive late or don't want to have a posh dinner then there are ample bars and bistros in the town

Saturday leave Hotel at 0930. Tour of 300km

Hotel in the small town of Vieux Ville.

Sunday. Leave at 0900. Tour takes in some of the bigger WW! sites at Thiepval, Beaumont Hamel and Ulster Tower on the way. Return to Le Wast which is 30km from Chunnel link.

Hotel - in small town of Le Wast - Chateau des Tourelles. 30km from the tunnel. Quiet hotel with reasonable restaurant. Menu between EURO 28 and 47

For those that want to take the tunnel on the Sunday can go directly from Le Wast to the Chunnel link.

That´s kind of the idea.......

The routes were a quick 5 minute job as an example and if this were t become something more then routes would be thought thruogh a bit more carefully to see if they were a bit shorter and to encompass some viewing sites...

I think it’s a great idea grantmac and potentially some of us on this side of the ditch could join in too, albeit without the ferry faff

I like the sound of this very much, thank you posting the idea.
Would it be okay if I didn't come on an X ADV 750 though as obviously these are the best bikes in the world ever and all I have is a crappy German bike?

If you build it, they will come.

The initiative should / can / will certainly work.

Do you want to give post #22 a date? If so, I can cut it into a fresh sub-section within France or (possibly better) to within the ‘Open Invites’ section as a specific invitation.

I’d suggest the latter, in case the next monthly long weekend jaunt is to Belgium or Germany or wherever.

What I would suggest rather than it just getting lumped into the open invite trips section how about a new title and its own string.
Maybe something along the lines of “long weekend trips across the channel”
No dates yet, maybe wait until a few more bids have had a chance to read. I only put up the original thread yesterday afternoon…..

It’s a good initiative for sure, not least as there are plenty of ‘good roads’ in the Pas de Calais region that put the lie to the oft spouted “It’s all shit, mate. Get on the motorway”. It will certainly suit anyone in the SE corner of England.

The only current downside is the inflated cost of a return crossing via the Chunnel or ferrry. But hey, for a good weekend away, it’s not a life changing expense.
I paid £62 'Standard' return two weeks ago, both crossing times were in sociable hours. I'm certain it was for up to three days. I am interested in this concept.

maybe some from Bristol, Devon etc will come to Wales :)

I’m sure some will be up for an organised Welsh jaunt. Not least, the area creates some interest when enquiries are made here.

I was chatting with a Tosser just this morning, who is holidaying in Pembrokeshire this summer. But we digress.

timings are a bit shit o'clock

Check-in closesDepartureArrivalDuration
07:4508:3013:454 hour and 15 minutes
16:1517:0022:004 hour
22:1523:0005:005 hour
timings shit ???
make them work for you.
i always take the late crossing .
for me , i can work til 6 , go home , shit ,shower, shave , eat then drive the 50 miles to get there , fill up here , cabin ( if you are rich ) . chair if you're not
it spits you out at 5 am , to empty roads and no police.
i can be on the far side of Paris by 10 am

Use whatever method / timings suit you best, often dictated by nothing more than a bod’s home address and ultimate destination.

It really matters very little how someone chooses (or not) to go….. and we see some seemingly bizarre choices on these pages. The thing to celebrate is that they do go and (hopefully) come back.

The other great thing, is that someone (and hopefully others, too) is prepared to put the effort in to arrange jaunt(s) as we all know these things don’t just happen.

the 5am is French time so you are getting up at around 3am UK time to be off the boat at 4am UK time. Not my preference. When I was younger I would get the LDLines boat to Le Havre and sleep in the kids soft play area in the corner of the bar. Now that I don't have to worry about that working lark, I like a more relaxed approach to travel as already stated in this thread. I also live further north now so I like to have a nice kip after riding down to the coast, either on an overnight boat from Portsmouth or Plymouth or a hotel just into France after an afternoon tunnel.
