Much the same as the old one ended.....

I was informed that 10W 40 fully synthetic was put in my 04 1200GS when I bought it. Only done 30 miles or so on it since I bought it at the beginning of December.

Do you reckon it'll be ok with that oil or should I change it ASAP?

But you can only learn by your mistakes or asking those more learned than you.

I still don't know the answer to my question either so obviously I haven't learned anything yet!

OK, fair do's and you will be fine because the oil is black and slippy and will stop the motor going bang.

why, as a matter of interest, did you ever think it wouldn't be OK:nenau

OK, once more from the same thread you asked your question in:

Blah... blah... blah... aha, here it is:

.

Blah... blah.... blah....

BMW Motorrad recommends not using synthetic oils for the first 10,000 km.

Blah... blah....blah....

Please do not hesitate to contact your authorised BMW Motorrad dealer if you have any questions relating the choice of a suitable engine oil for your
motorcycle.

On the next page of the manual, it continues:

Permissible viscosity classes

SAE 5 W- ≥30 -20...20 °C, Operation at low temperatures

SAE 10 W-40 -10...30 °C, Operation at moderate temperatures

SAE 15 W- ≥40 ≥0 °C

SAE 20 W- ≥40 ≥0 °C

SAE 5 W- ≥50 ≥-20 °C, High-grade and synthetic oils, operation in all temperature ranges

SAE 10 W- ≥50 ≥-20 °C, High-grade and synthetic oils, operation in all temperature ranges
So, we can conclude that 10-40 will be fine and - if your bike has done over 10,000 klicks - synth will be fine, too.

If it is any comfort at all, my 05 vanilla GS's owner's manual used to specify 10-40 exactly, followed by a very similar 'other viscosities' chart. My 06 GSA's manual switches to 20-50 for what is otherwise a near enough identical engine. 10-40 did / does fine in both. As did / does 20-50 and a hybrid mixture of the two, a sort of 15-45 or thereabouts if I mixed them 50/50. Synth, semi-synth and straight mineral they have all gone in and mixed with no problems.

Just do as it suggests in your owners handbook and you will not go far wrong and don't worry about draining it out / refilling it just for the sake of it. It will simply be a waste of money.

:beerjug:

PS Why didn't I just say that in the first place?

Answer: Because,

Much the same as the old one ended.....

was quicker.

Go in peace.

Drain the oil out of your car and put that in the bike............ being green and recycling is the thing nowadays
The oil out of the bike you can use in the deep fat fryer sorted:augie

How's your 'What exhaust?' poll going?

It's probably up there with the 'my bike won't start, is it my battery?' and 'my heated grips cause my throttle to stick' and 'I've got this great video clip with Hitler in it' threads.:D

I dunno Puk, I kinda liked the "should I take my panniers off when I go into my hotel" thread myself:augie
