I am a newbie….yes I can hear you all thinking ‘so what’ just another lucky person coming to his senses and buying a fabulous GS. But when I say newbie I mean it in a more global sense. Yes I have bought a GS, in fact a lovely shiny silver 2003 GS adventure (I will add pics when someone tells me how to). The problem is I have not passed my test yet. So now I guess you are all thinking ‘born again rider’…..well that’s not true either. I am straight out of the womb as I am just learning to ride a bike. I will, however, confess to owning a 125 about twelve years ago which some thieving bastards stole within one week of purchasing it. So the sum of my experience is a few days on a 125, which was so long ago I cant even remember what make it was, and the three days of lessons I have had in the last few weeks in a school playground with a load of spotty 16 year olds. I intend to write regular updates to give all you experienced riders an insight into what it’s like to have a 1150 GS as a first bike. I thought you may get a few laughs from this and in return I, hopefully, will get a few tips and useful bits of advice.

To bring you all up to speed a quick summary of my current status is:

• The bike is being delivered this weekend, bought it from a lovely guy on the South Coast who cherished it, or at least that’s what he told me (bought it without seeing it)

• Passed my theory test on 6th June – I now understand why the current pass rate is low. The multiple-choice is a cinch but understanding what exactly one should do on the hazard perception test is way beyond the understanding of most normal people (I was going to say bikers but realise I now fall within that category). Hmmm….fall…..perhaps that is not the best word to use as I already have visions of myself lying on the ground looking upwards in a Russel Crowe sort of manner (gladiator) with quarter of a ton of german engineering pinning me down like a Turkish wrestler.

• Practical test booked for 21st June – I am being well taught by an experienced fireman from Hartlepool so should be a piece of piss.

At this point I think I should mention that I have a very understanding wife. It all started when I said to her ‘adventures calling my dear’. At first she put it down to a mid life crisis but when she knew I was serious she was all for me going off to far distant lands, her actual words being the further the better.

Next instalment will include details of my motorbike training and a visit to the BMW dealer to get some appropriate attire….boy are those rallye 2 jackets heavy, would not be surprised if seven stone weaklings instantaneously collapsed under the sheer weight of them. Oh, and if its after the weekend I will also convey first impressions of my new chariot.

That’s all for now.

Richard

p.s if you do see someone 6’3” and 17st with a yellow vest sporting trainee on the back, on a bike way too small, being followed by a fireman in the North East of England please stay well clear.

Richard

Welcome. I really enjoyed reading your post. You'll find lots of advice here, some of it will even be useful.

All the best with your test and enjoy yourself.

Peter

Good luck Richard:thumb You'll be fine though - mate of mine passed his bike test 2 months ago and had an 1150GS as his first bike - we got back from a 2000 mile trip around Scotland last week:) Once moving a GS is a very easy bike to ride. Look forward to hearing how you get on.

Good on you!

I can't wait for your next post. It will be interesting to find out what you think of the Adv after a 125 and how you get on.

Good luck!

Excellent! Well done and great spririt. With you on the haz perception. Driving 18 years, how the hell I got away with it I'll never know after seeing that :D

Keep us posted. Your decision will shock some, and not others. I bought my SV before I passed ;)

Hello Richard and welcome to the wonderful world of GS's. I'm on my 2nd GS (I graduated to my current 1150GSA from a 84 R80GS) and what a difference! Can't imagine what it would be like to go from a 125 to a 1150 :P

My boss was exactly in the same position as you last year. Having never ever ridden a bike in his life just went out and bought a R1150GS, did his tests and went riding. His wife made him sell the bike 4 months later but he now regularly hires bikes from his local BMW man. Both me and him are booked on the BMW Level 1 off road course later this month.

Good luck with the test and have fun riding!

Richard

Good luck with your test and keep us posted :thumb

PS nice write up!

Good Luck

Hi Richard from a fellow Stocktoner...!!
Good luck with the test, and keep us informed how things are going. Who are you doing the training with?, is it the Council lads at Billingham?
I'm a former Instructor, so I know how these things go, so dont forget, keep in touch.

Bikermike,

For some reason I have ended up doing my training over in Hartlepool. The guy who is teaching me is called Graham, a fireman with a big yellow Tiger.....great instructor, although I wish he would stop telling me to get my foot off the back brake, go faster and to cancel the indicators.

I have started writing part 2 of my 'newbie tale' which should be with you soon.
Bike is being delivered Sat morning...whoaaa....wonder what speed I will get up to around the garden...watch out gnomes your time is up :reaper

Thanks to all who have replied.

I have a feeling you're going to fit in very nicely Richard...welcome to your new home ;)

And start planning now....your first official challenge is to make the Hog Raost (sic) with a full license :thumb

Hi Richard,

Welcome indeed and let me be the first to give you a bit of a ribbing. You'll have to get used to it if you want to stick around here...

Should you not have gone to a motorcycle instructor to get your training and not a fireman? I don't care how exotic his pets are - I don't see how it will help you ride. :)

And if you want to stop the instructor telling you to cancel the indicators REMEMBER TO CANCEL THEM!! - That should shut him up.

:D:D

Seriously - good luck with it and don't underestimate your test. Confident and positive is what you want to be, not complacent and not nervous.

Sounds easier than it is.

Hi Richard

I passed my test last year and bought an 1150GS within a week. Seemed a bit big and heavy at first but no real problems.

Done over 7000 miles now and enjoyed every minute of it.

Good luck with your test!

Regards

David

First bike !

Well, it is obvious that we all wish you well - but DO TAKE IT STEADILY. In the Battle of Britain 50% of the pilots were shot down in their first five days. Those that survived that period carried on and many became aces. What's that got to do with your situation ? We learn to survive very quickly but during the learning process we are very vulnerable. I won't say good luck - that shouldn't come into it. Get the BEST instruction you can. Brian

Greetings

Greetings from over the moors, (Whitby)

Best o luck for the 21st :thumb

Watch out for low hanging monkeys then!!
Nowt wrong with firemen, but if a big red truck with blue lights and sirens goes past you during your lesson...if the radio goes quiet...he's reverted to his other job!!!!
As for the foot on the brake..mmmm...GET YOUR FOOT OFF THE B****Y BRAKE!!!!!
By the way, I've e-mailed the RSPCG, about the impending physical damge you will be inflicting from this weekend..!!
(Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Gnomes)
Good luck!!
