Our two week trip around the alps. The best selfie I could find

As various threads have been discussing, the forecast across Europe was not good but we managed to miss most of it with only one really wet days riding :bow

Instead of doing the usual Black Forest/Vosges run down the plan was to go east in Germany and do a bit of 'skirting' with the Czech border.

The plan looked like this.

Summer2014.jpg

We managed to get pole position on the ferry.

A quick look over to the Zeebrugge ferry.

Before we declared it Grolsch O'clock

How do Cooperman,

We are following the top part of your trip down to Nuremberg, we then swing down for an overnight in Munich,so not stalking you this year.
Your route looks grand, some top places to visit and stay in. Have or hope you had a good trip.
Lounging patiently on the couch awaiting your next instalment, not moving for a few hours as just back from a quick blast up to the Southern Lake District and pass roads.:thumby:

I'm in Coops.:popcorn

Arnhem, Dams and Bad Hersfeld

First stop Arnhem to have a look at the John Frost bridge.

There is a bit of memorial to the bridge's WWII significance, but I must admit I was underwhelmed.

No problem, we headed off across town to the Airbourne museum.

A nice exhibition/tribute with a few amusing parts :)

Stopping for refreshments in the adjacent cafe a group of lads in Jeeps rolled in.

P7120220.JPG

Whilst it was good to see, I would recommend the Museum at Nijmegen as a better attraction :thumb

We then coasted across country calling into the Mohne and Eder dams.

P7120223.JPG

Our overnight destination was Bad Hersfeld, a typical German town with a mixture of original and new.

What's this - a Chinese panda

Before we get into the Wursts/pizzas/Pasta, why not :thumb2

Nuremberg

This was the Sunday of the World Cup Final, Germany v Argentina, so we were looking forward to getting to Nuremberg for the festivities.

It was a wet day, not continual but we got caught in a few downpours :(

We anticipated one deluge by taking refuge in this place.

Parked up next to an early GS prototype :augie

The rain started

And whilst the hounds had to stay outside.

We were invited in.

A nice un-planned bonus :)

So - on to the fussball.

We ended up in the town hall where there were a number of options to watch the game.

Inexpensive and well worth a visit as it also includes a thought provoking exhibition on another floor :thumb

Danube & Salzburg

Salzburg viewed from the Salt Fortress.

But first we skirted along the Czech border going through various German nature parks before descending into Austria at Passau and joining the Danube.

On to the Dolomites.

P7180592.JPG

Along this part of the ride I was getting buzzed behind by a car. We came up behind a bus and I went for the overtake which I made OK but not totally comfortably with the oncoming traffic. At least I would have the benefit of losing the car off my tail. I checked the mirror and was amazed to see the car still behind me. Feck knows how he did it, but it was time to let him go if he was willing to take those risks

Before Cortina it is custom and practice to call into Lake Misurina :thumb

Special parking for bikes - but be careful :augie

We stayed in this place, close to the centre but on the ring road on an uphill section. It was great listening to the HGV's going down the gear box :(

Time for some activity. What's on offer?

Heading towards Trento we got onto a great flowing road with no hairpins which must have gone on for 30km - really enjoyable biking. I will have to have a look where it was :nenau

We came the back way into Garda through Arco to avoid the traffic and had to endure this for the rest of the afternoon :Motomartin

We had some stormy weather with low cloud.

Some people just don't care.

Bad Oberdorf and Home

We have some good friends in Bad Oberdorf which we always manage to combine into our trip plans, so this was our destination today.

Timmelsjoch was also in the plan but the weather was unfavourable and I find no fun in paying to do zero visibility passes in the rain.

We came into Bavaria at Garmish and then a flowing cross country run past the Linderhof Palace.

This run takes you in and out of Austria/Germany. i have been caught out previously not having a vignette (my fault :( ) by the Austrian plod, but this time they were really taking the piss. On the road from Reutte to Oberjoch there were 2 hidden speed traps. Both times I was warned by the oncoming traffic, but the last one was a complete joke - it was set up shooting across from behind a building!

Having done plenty of riding through Austria I only see this enforcement activity on the borders which just makes it completely opportunistic

One last stop at Oberjoch and the posh Panorama hotel.

photo%2B2.JPG

This was funny :D

There were roadworks on the access road with the road actually closed below the hotel. We were sat outside having a beer when the sound of another bike got our attention. It was a couple who we quicky understood to be British with no comms equipment :augie

"WHAT THE FUCK HAVE YOU COME DOWN HERE FOR?" whispered the female pillion.

"I'M FOLLOWING THE FUCKING SAT NAV" was the measured response from the guy holding the bars.

I nearly spilt my Weisse beer :clap

Descending the Oberjoch Pass we arrived at Hotel Hirsch, our usual skiing destination. The economics of the region are changing. The winters no longer guarantee good snow and alternatively the summers do always bring the sun. Additionally getting staff is not easy.

Manfred the owner of the hotel has seen the writing on the wall and has done a deal with the Royal Marines for his hotel to become their Bavarian training home.

Here's Manny with his wife Doris being congratulated by Vice Admiral David Steel CBE.

IMG_0209.jpg

Works were well underway to convert the house for the needs of the Marines. The basement garage is being racked out to accommodate skis/kayacks/bikes etc.

So we had one last day which, other than a quick game of tennis where we were the targets of blood sucking horse flies, was mainly spend in beer gardens

The penalty for such largess was a 550 mile trip back to Rotterdam :( As has been said on other threads the roadworks are bad across Germany. Frankfurt was particularly bad with 10 miles of stationary traffic, fortunately for us in the other direction.

We managed to make a pit stop window for a McD's stop in Holland to discover Ronald's latest innovation. Bored of queuing for your food? You can now walk over to a terminal, tap in your order, pay by card and then wonder over to the fast pass where your fodder awaits you.

So that was it. A great experience completed and only the roll home from Hull to Leeds in the morning to go. This was when the problems started :(

Queuing for customs I realised the left hand controls were dead. No access to the menu, no indicators etc. Bugger. I know this is a common fault and I consoled myself that it had happened right at the end of the trip.

We cleared customs and set off through Hull when I realised something did not feel right. I has been using a sling bag to keep my camera handy, as well as housing binos/ipad/chargers. I had left it behind on the ferry deck when packing the bike

I now must pass on my thanks to P&O. Within 10 minutes of returning to the ferry terminal I had the bag and all it's contents back in my mitts :bow

I'm now counting down the three weeks to go before I'm back on the ferry for the lad's week away :thumb2

Where did you stay in Riva, and did you walk up to the Bastion ?. This gives a fantastic view of the area, after you have finished with the iron lung you need due to walking up there :D
