A Question for GPSV Users.....

I’m going on a tour around France and Italy next week and have created some routes in Mapsource on my pc. However, because of the lack of sufficient memory to store all the necessary detailed maps, I cannot transfer my routes to the GPSV. How do you get around this?

Being restricted to 19Mbytes means I can only really download the detailed maps for the destinations along the way, leaving the basemap to cover all the bits in between.

What is the best way to plan a route taking in to account the restrictions of the GPSV? Is the solution to only use the roads on the basemap except where you have transferred selected detailed maps? In which case, is it possible to select only the basemap roads in Mapsource, or will I have to plot the route on the GPSV itself?

Thats the way I do it, just plot in mapsource and add as many maps as you can , on the selected maps list it tells you how many Mbytes you have used.

I think it's possible to get MapSource to just use the basemap ... but I'm not at my PC now and I can't remember how. Will report back later if I find out

What you need to do is break up your route into sections. Make some wayppoints that begin and end the route sections when you are just running on the base map. As soon as you move into the detailed maps switch to the other route. This will ensure the unit doesn't get confused and recalculate you off your intended route.

Ive never had a problem with it getting confused over base map or detailed maps, what I have found is that on base maps the arrow can be of the road,even when "lock to road " is selected, this is due to base map errors.

Reporting back - I think the menu option "View -> Hide GPS map detail" causes MapSource to display the Base Map. Or use CTRL-G to toggle.

Just plot the route in map source the GPS will display what it can, i.e no maps loaded it will use the base map, maps loaded it will use those or a combination off the two if needed.

Thanks for the good advice guys. The CTRL-G toggle is handy as that will save me having to keep referring to the GPS screen. Nice one
