OK, I've got a Datatool Motorcycle Battery Charger, which looks very much like the Optimate one. In the box is a wire which you can connect to the battery and on the other end is a plug with a rubber cover for easy and convenient connection to the charger when it's parked in the garage.

I've looked at the other threads but this isn't really clear. Can anyone answer the following?

1) Can you connect an Optimate/Datatool charger direct to the battery like this without damaging the black box on the R1200GS?

2) If not, will disconnecting the negative lead be sufficient?

3) If the battery does need to be disconnected, what is reset? The clock and tripmeter? Is that right?

Thanks

1) Not according to the manual, nor does Optimate say you can do this (all they say is that their charger is compatible with the 1200). That said, lots of people do, and no-one has reported a fried ECU. Anyone who says you can connect directly is merely expressing an opinion, even if that someone is from a BMW dealership.

2) Yes.

4) I have been told to wind full throttle on/off twice, with the ignition on (but not the engine :P ) once the battery is re-connected.
