A ramble around Romania and the Balkans

Once a great read , always a great read .

Just stumbled across this great trip write up. Absolutely brilliant even with no photos anymore. Love all the detail. I too really liked Sarejevo when we visited in 2017.

Its a shame I’m tooooo late for the photos

I'm off to Romania in September and found this after a search. What a fantastic read!! It's a shame I couldn't access the photos but your descriptions were great so I didn't feel that I'd missed anything.

@Drumacoon Lad. You and that impish @simondippenhall fella.... What a totally inspirational pair, you make!

You needed the rich voice of the late, great Seamus Heaney
of Mossbawn, Co. Derry, to narrate your adventures and captivate a new generation, glued to smartphone screens and Instagram superficially.

'Carpe diem'

That's very kind, and I'll pass on to Simon. I've never quoted the Nobel Prize winner in my write ups, and I do have a few signed copies of his work. I do remember a few lines come into my head, from Lake Isle of Inisfree, by Yeates. It was in Zambia I believe, and I saw a guy building a round hut, applying clay to the wooden stakes forming the outer wall.

"I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made..."

When I reflect on things I see as I ride through countries, I wish I'd taken the time to stop and learn more about what is going on. Here was an opportunity to understand how those huts were built. The pressure of getting to the destination is a big driver of course. Despite these reflections, I'm not sure I'll travel differently next time.

You see, you just needed to be reminded that the journey is the richness of life. (!)

You're a lucky chap to have signed copies of the great man's works.... To my ears, the 2 richest voices of the English language belong to Seamus and to Richard Burton.. . I wonder if they were ever recorded together on a work.

(Separately, in New World terms, I think it has to be Morgan Freeman).

Thanks for taking the time to write and share your experiences....
