I had a bit of a ride in Kent last weekend, and want to see what more it has to offer this weekend. As the garden of England, can someone from Kent recommend me some good biking roads to try, taking in some nice "proper" villages; you know, country pubs and cricket greens. Any recommendations for a nice pub with great food to try for lunch would be appreciated.:thumb

I can recommend the route from Charing to Lamberhurst.

Look at google maps and it'll become obvious. It's a very nice route.

That link didn't work. But I think I've found it!

Where are you coming into Kent and how far do you want to go?

There are huge variety of options and loads to do but it is not clear where from/to, this would make recommending easier.

JH :)

Take a look at Four Elms-Penshurst-Chiddington Causeway-Tunbridge Wells-Tonbridge-Maidstone. Can't really go wrong on any roads linking them plus easy access/egress to the main roads in the area. The Garden of England at it's best IMHO. If you head further SE the roads open up more, so faster and some nice seaside towns to visit. Downside at weekends is more traffic down there = more D***heads on bikes = more police!

Where do you want to start & finish, how long ride are you looking for? What kind of mileage?

Plus via the villages all the way along through Goudhurst, Sissinghurst and all the 'Dens right down to Tenterden, great rides.

From Tenterden to Appledore then along the canal road to Rye.

Nor sure Hastings is worth it (nothing like Foyles War), maybe along the coast road through Camber Sands to Rye

We'll be coming in from Haywards Heath direction

The plan is to avoid as much traffic as possible, and police of course.:beerjug:

We're coming from Guildford, so will go via Horsham, Haywards Heath then into Kent via one of the quieter A or B roads I guess. Looking to do around 200-250 miles, probably leaving around 8am, an back home by 5pm. We will want to stop a few times, including finding a decent country pub in a quiet village somewhere.

Come on folks, someone recommend me a decent country pub with top nosh; we need somewhere to aim for.:beerjug:

Ok ... its not a round route, it's there and back (but that's no bother - they're nice roads and they'll look completely different on the way home..)

Come into Kent and head for Hurst Green, get on the A21.

Drive North and come off on the B2079, It'll take you past Bedgebury forest to Goudhurst.

Goudhurst turn right and ride the A262 east bound all the way to 'Thre Chimneys' (This is about 2 mile short of Bidenden on a sharp right hand bend).

Turn left at three chimneys and follow the road (Frittenden road), follow it over the crossroads at Headcorn road, (now into Bell lane..), and follow that road all the way to Pluckley.

Pluckley to Charing ..

From charing use what ever your satnav says to take little rural b roads to Stalisfield Green.

Go home the way you came.

Trust me ... Luverly roads ... :thumb2

Thanks Giles, I knew you'd come up with something.:thumb:beerjug:

I hadn't looked at Tunneruk's route or map. But spookily it's exactly the same route as my recommendation :clap

Let us know how you get on and what you make of the pub in Stalisfield. (Been there a couple of times - very nice ... :thumb2).

Rode Tunneruks route today from Lamberhurst to Charing and then on to Canterbury etc. Most enjoyable!! More routes welcomed - keep up the good work!!:clap

Just got back, 244 mile round trp.:thumb Thanks to Tunner and Giles for the route, and thanks to Giles for the pub recommendation.:beerjug:

Food there was awesome. Smoked salmon with loads of bread and butter, followed by chicken breast and chicken confit wrapped in bacon with dauphinois potatoes and veg followed by apple and pear crumble with ice cream.:D

Then a ride home on a rather full stomach.:D Fantastic roads, not much traffic (nothing that a few swift overtakes couldn't sort:D) all in all a great day out.:JB
