A Solution to Theft of Motorcycle Tax-Disks?

I have to say that I've never had a tax disc stolen since I strted to ride motorbikes in 1968.

And it's not that much hassle to get a replacement form the DVLA anyway - or so I'm told.

Of course, you might get some tickets for the offence of 'failing to display' ....

Tax Disc

This year i have had the tax disc stolen twice at a replacement cost of £7 each time from the DVLA. prior to this year in 32 years or car & bike use i've never had a tax disc stolen? if ever catch the f****** :mcgun

In my Wallet, (Plenty of room as there's nowt else in there.... :D )

PNC will tell the Osifer/Trafik Warden that it's got a current Licence anyway...

Another fix is.....
put double sided sticky tape on the back of disc, stick disc to suitable flat surface then cover with a sheet of that clear stickyback sheet that is used for covering books. too much hassle for theiving scum to bother with then :thumb
In my Wallet
It`s all stored on the dvla database so unlikely these days to get a ticket for no display. all they need is your plate number to check.

Another suggestion is to scan the disc, keep the original safe indoors (or even under your seat) and display the copy on the bike.
Whilst I'm pretty sure it's not technically legal, I would guess you would be OK if it ever went the distance. Especially if you had a history of stolen tax discs.

Get colour photocopy of VEL made and display this in the tax disc holder with the genuine one in your wallet. Technically illegal but I've never heard pf a copper who'd bother with allen keys and a spanner to dismantle the holder and examine it closely. Incidentally the VEL should be on the lefthand side of the bike in front of the forward edge of the saddle.

I spoke to a copper about this and, if you keep it in your wallet or pocket and can display it when asked, most BiB will accept this situation.

They know how prone you can be to having these nicked when on a bike or driving a convertible.

After two disc thefts it now stays in my wallet. In fact it was a member of Avon & Somerset police who told me to do this after the 2nd disc was stolen. I have never had a problem since.

Why not keep the original in a poly bag under the seat with the toolkit so you always have it?

Sods law I would be out without my wallet when asked to produce.

I've been doing this for years,.....photocopy the original (black & white), put the copy in a self adhesive inside car windscreen type, stick it to the inside of the bikes screen. Never had one nicked, and no trouble fron the law.

Another tip is just to use clear selotape over the details on the tax disc. It won't stop them stealing the disc but they will have to remove the tape to change any details and when they try this the tape will lift everything rendering the disc useless. If they leave the details as they are this is the most common way for them to get caught for displaying a fraudulent tax disc which will also see them getting done with the original theft from the bike or alternatively reset of stolen property.

Vehicle excise licence theft should continue to reduce dramatically, with all the automatic number plate readers in use.

laminate it and stick to fork leg

I "laminate" mine using waterproof clear vinyl (from mx shops) and stick it around the forkleg.

A couple of layers makes it waterproof and a real pain to try and remove!

Tax disc?

What's a tax disc?

Never had one stolen but the last time I lost a tax disc it was burried in the head of bamby down by Purbright near Guildford. Little bugger bent the crash bar as well.

Life's great if you don't weaken

I saw a bobby checking all the tax discs on the motorbikes at Bedford station the other week.....torch and all......nice to see that they are hard at work catching the criminals rather than just seeing if the government are getting their pockets filled!!

Isn't that part of what that officer was doing? How else will stolen tax disks be detected? Given also that tax evaders are also likely to be uninsured should we not be pleased to know the police are paying attention?
