Greetings all - long time, no post!

A question for the GPS gurus - non-GS , but you lot are the best source of info on this stuff that I know about...

I am buying a Toyota from Japan, and it has a satnav system fitted (OEM). Now, on the one hand I am receiving message, "It won't work in the UK, you may as well ditch it".
On the other hand, well, there is the assembled wisdom of the UKGSer forum.

Any ideas?

The idea of having a GPS at all is a new one for me (being an analogue navigator), but seeing as it is there, it would be nice to be able to make it work:D

Still a fair few familiar names on here, I notice:beerjug:

Welcome back Peter.......

This might be of use to you;

(the bottom paragraph)

Japan tends to be a way ahead with systems but usually not-compatable with western stuff.....having said that, the basic function of a GPS system is just to recieve and interpret a radio signal from a satellite......it's the mapping and routing that you won't be likely to get over here suitable for use on an OEM jap system.

That NCS system appears to just use the signal input and the display hardware with their own parts in between to make it compatable with UK mapping/routing.....it would only be worth it TBH if you wanted a) to keep the original high quality screen and aerial and
b) if it's cheaper than getting a Garmin querst or similar...and I very much doubt that it would be.

I reckon you might find yourself getting a quest for nav purposes, and you could probably stick a DVD player or something in that would feed the screen if you wanted to.

In short, I think the answer will be yes, it is possible to make it work, but not at any sort of price that makes it worthwhile.

But then again, I'm just guessing ;)

:D :D

the very few sat navs i've seen on imports just have japan in the mapping.

Fanum - thanks for that - I am following that up, and will report if/when I get anything.

I see your Photoshopping skills haven't been allowed to get rusty
:D

Nice idea, but would only work in most of the UK for 3 months of the year, and only 2 weeks in Manchester:eek:
