Right, I had a list of excuses as to why I want a top box for cheap, but here's the killer... I want a top box for cheap because I'm skint :D

Basically I always wanted a luggage set but didn't want to spend £30,000 on a basic Metal Mule setup etc etc, recently I have seen the Coocases which seem appealing, especially the gigantic 48ltr one.

But what seemed like a nice in-expensive solution turned out to require a SW Motech rack and an adapter plate for the Coocase itself, all tallied up this isn't mega expensive, but I wanted to know other options.

So here's the question / discussion, for the F800GS, is there a cheap way to slap a top box on the back? I'm not looking for insane levels of quality, so long as the thing handles a lid or two, a large DSLR rucksack etc without falling to bits.

As an aside the Coocase 48ltr box uses a large plate than it's three siblings, which is a shame because I was contemplating purchasing a smaller on in the future, just for everyday use (commuting etc).

Cheers guys + girls!

How much is cheap? I payed £150 for my givi topbox, than £100 for the plate to fit the gs from sw motech! Not bad, and fits two helmets! I'll post a photo if your interested when im on the comp, not the mob! Do be carefully with goin to cheap! In my experince its worth paying that bit mord for give! This is the second bike the topbox has been on, and im sure it will go on the next one! :-D

you've got an 800GS and you can't afford a topbox ???

have you ever thought of...oooh...i don't know..maybe getting a cheaper bike and having spare money.?

I bought an R1200GS top box off this ere forum for about £120, then got the 800 plate new from BMW for about £50. I don't think you'll find too may options for much less. Also uses the same key as the bike.

I use a Givi E340 (34L) top box. Its £65.00 new complete with mounting plate. I bought mine for £25.00 of ebay. You don't need a fitting kit, I made four spacer tubes and mounted the plate directly over the standard grab rail.
3/4" nb tube is the right size. You need to notch some ribs in the mounting plate to get the bolts to fit, so use big washers both sides.
I did an article

showing how to fit it. Some predicted doom if I did not also fit a Touratech mounting plate but in 24000 and many loaded up holidays it has not failed.

Aye, Christmas + a load of birthdays on a graduate salary, not to worry though ;-)

Thanks for the suggestion guys :-)

Oh, yeah. That's the only correlation; Motorcycle price is directly related to the term "skint". Very perceptive of you, Sherlock! :aidan :comfort
