A very sad day for Tollerton Airport

Tollerton airport effectively closed yesterday with the Sherwood flying club moving to a new airport. It will be really sad not seeing smaller planes, gyrocopters, paragliders, helicopters and even small jets flying overhead from our back garden. It's also been a useful fuelling stop for air ambulances and commercial helicopters.

I'll miss it, but its invitable for smaller airfields that the land value and desire to build new homes will at some point be a consideration for the land owner and developers.

I think you have to be realistic, the councils and planning departments will be under huge pressure to build more homes and this is effectively a brownfield or underutilised site albeit one with historic signficiance.

I love everything about it, but now the landowner has sold the site to Vistry the writing is on the wall (assuming Vistry don't go bust, but even then the land would easily be sold).

It's a shame, I was gutted when they closed Plymouth Airport as it had a great little GA community and in my younger days was perfect for me going weekenders to see my girlfriend in Guernsey. Now they've built over one of the runways, they are still trying to build on the main one, the promises of big money to the council isn't going to fall on deaf ears when everyones screaming out for more housing.

It is a shame.
I enjoy going to small airfields and spending time looking around.
I did my glider training from a small airfield. Really enjoyed that time.
Houses are built everywhere these days, with little regard to the infrastructure around. They jam up local towns, choke local Drs surgeries and schools with all these new estates they build.
