A weekend break in north east France, all within 40 miles of Calais….

Thanks that brings back a few memories.I have done this route a few times, it's not very far and it's completely different from a day out on the south coast this side of the channel, and if you split the cost of the train crossing amongst the passengers in the car it was worth it for a day trip especially if they had a deal on. It's not until you stand on the top of Cap Griz Nez you realise how close we are to invaders, I think it looks closer from that side due to our south facing sun lit coast line.

The last time I went over you could still get a short term passport from the post office, a few years ago now although I can't remember exactly when this service ended and I can't find the information on the internet.

Than you.

Blimey, I can remember the short term passports. I think they vanished with fuel coupons for foreign fuel.

Napoleon and Hitler, both stood at Cap Gris Nez, frustrated by a few miles of water and, of course, a powerful navy.

There is a strange optical illusion, whereby ships in the Channel can sometimes appear to be within arm’s reach.
