What makes a good seat comfortable?

I've messed around in the past with gel pads and gelastic (looking for a cost-effective solution to numb bum syndrome) but are the Sargent's and the Corbin's really that much better?

I also wonder what difference shape makes? Looking at some of the custom seats they have a lot more shape to them. Does this really make a difference too?

I've got a Sargent Seat and rate it highly.

After the initial bedding in and getting used to the slightly different riding position I think they're as good as you can get.

I've done 1000+ miles a day on them numerous times.

The beauty is whatever you pick, Sargent, Touratech etc, if you don't get on with it you can sell it on here for very little loss.

Just used a Sgt on a 3500 mile jaunt, brilliant, difficult to put a cpmparison but what i do know is every day i thanked god i wasnt on a standard one

Standard seat front high, rear low, the dogs testi.

Corbins tend to be flat and harder than standard.

"Soft" isn't good for comfort over long distances.

But(t) one things for sure- there is no "best seat". It all depends what your arse fits.

I've tried them all and a corbin suits me. I've got three of them, one for the RT, one for the harley, and one for the GS.

On my 1150 I tried standard seats , standard with modified padding, standard with gel pad insert plus a borrowed Touratech and they were all extemely uncomfortable.

In the end I got a s/hand standard seat and used an AIRHAWK , result 500 miles in a day without the intense pain I got with all of the above after 60 to 100 miles.

It is all very subjective as the lad who bought my 1150 has done 200 to 300 miles in a day without a problem.

On my 1200 adventure the standard seat is okay for 150 miles yet strangely the s/hand 1200gs standard height seat I also have with half the padding is just as good.

Another satisfied Corbin customer here. You spend £££££'s on an uncomfortable bike, shell out a few more on a seat that makes it a pleasure to ride.

Recently been to poland and back on my gsa,std seat high at front and low at back which i found perfect and that included a 1200 km day from mulhouse to krakow

+1 Sargent - huge improvement on standard, still get some numbness but not the bone achingly "I'll get off and walk the rest" pain. I think it spreads the 'load' better than the standard seat.

Surprised that nobody has mentioned the Wunderlich Erco seats. I've fitted one to my 1100 and it fits me perfectly. Extremely comfortable and combined with my 41lt tank, I can do hours non-stop and no discomfort at all.
Well worth considering.

I had one of those on my 1100 customer loan bike.

The reason i used it on the loaner was because it was so uncomfortable that it kept the miles low as no one would/could ride it any distance

So proves what i said in my earlier post - no one can recommend a "best seat". It all depends on your arse/seat type suitability.

sargeant no good for me after 300 miles, wunderlich didn't suit, gel pads hopeless, sheepskin slight improvement.

17 hours on my corbin arse to torromelinos (yackety yack) with no pain

Just had my Corbin back from upholsterers - oh my I forgot just how better than standard it is. I've had wunderlich/Touratech, BMW comfort, Sargeant, Melvyn'd standard, Airhawk. Nothing touches the Corbin but that's for me. I just wish I could get both front, rear & Givi top box on the bike at the same time!!

Got a sergeant took a bit of time to bed in (or did my arse just get used to it) use a airhawk on long trips and lowered footpegs comfy.
