A686 Hartside proposed speed limit reduction

I honestly wish you well guys, I really do.

We've had this sort of shite in Oxfordshire (aka Poxgatsfordshire) for the last ten years. Limit after limit being lowered - and Talivan enforced.

We got a serious amount of support together to oppose the last lot of numpty 50 limits and more than 70 objections. We proved the limits didn't work. We got the local press involved.

The council put the limits through on the nod.

I do truly hope you're more successful than we were because limits like this bring the rest into disrepute, encourage people to speed (because 60 is perfectly safe anyway), and most crashes happen UNDER the limit. But the council has to be seen to be doing something - and they simply make important what's measurable.

P.S. If you want copies of my objections down here, let me know. I'll e-mail them.

Personally I can't see what the problem is.

The A686 is a mix of 40/50/NSL before Alston already and plod sometimes sit at the bottom of the hill before the bridge before Alston, if you're still over the limit there you've got a problem!

As for Oxford style reductions, not up here mate. They don't need to, the roads are too bumpy, rippled, pot-holed and generally too poorly maintained to bother with speed limits.

Also I watched a tractor go up Hartside last week [1], he wasn't hanging around, bloody things wreck the roads.

And not before time. I was out a few weeks ago leading a gentle bimble when three hooligans on GSs flashed by at a rate of knots. Fair scared the life out of me:augie

Had my reply from Cumbria council already, thanking me for the letter and telling me I'll be kept informed:thumb2
